John Lennon and Yoko Ono returned to New York City from Houston, Texas, on 19 December 1971.
Earlier in the week, Texan judge Peter S Solito had granted Ono visitation rights to see her eight-year-old daughter Kyoko, who was living in Texas with her father Tony Cox. A stipulation of the rights were that Ono and Lennon needed to post a bond of $20,000, and that Ono needed to spend an initial weekend with Kyoko. After those requirements were met, she could have custody of Kyoko on alternate weekends.
Despite flying to Texas, Ono and Lennon were blocked from seeing Kyoko by Cox. They spent much of this day attempting to negotiate with him but, unable to agree on terms, Ono and Lennon flew back to New York on this evening.
