Studio B, Sound Recorders Studio, Los Angeles
Producer: Paul McCartney
Engineer: Eirik Wangberg
Paul McCartney re-recorded his lead vocals for the Ram song ‘3 Legs’ on 15 March 1971.
He had been unhappy with the previous attempts, so asked studio engineer Eirik Wangberg to set up a pair of Auratone speakers behind the microphone, to face him as he sang. The intention was to create a dirtier blues sound.
This way, he would be able to feel the music, not just having the sound in some cans. He felt that being surrounded by the sound, he would sing better. The monitors created some leakage, and in the mix, I opened that leakage up at certain points, adding a special delay. I think it really rocks—it makes the mix a bit more magical.
