‘Have You Seen My Baby’ is the second song on Ringo Starr’s 1973 album Ringo.
The song was written by Randy Newman, and was first released as a single by Fats Domino in 1969. Newman’s own version was the only single issued from his second album, 1970’s 12 Songs.
First editions of Ringo incorrectly listed the song as ‘Hold On’.
In the studio
‘Have You Seen My Baby’ was the first song recorded for Ringo. The backing track was recorded on 5 March 1973 at Sunset Sound Recorders Studio in Los Angeles.
Overdubs followed on 15 May, again at Sunset Sound, and on 11 July at Producer’s Workshop in LA. Final overdubs are believed to have been added at A&M Studios at an unspecified date.
‘Have You Seen My Baby’ featured electric guitar by Marc Bolan, and a piano solo by James Booker. Bolan and Starr had worked together the previous year on the film Born To Boogie, which was released by The Beatles’ company Apple Films.
