This probably isn’t possible with (if I’m correct with what this is run by) Wordpress. But have you ever considered adding friends or possibly even a chatroom? I know some people in the forums personally, it’d be an interesting feature to have a notification whenever he posts a new topic.
But like I said, I don’t remember if Wordpress is capable of that.

I’ve been toying with the idea of creating more of a social network out of the site, so people’s forum comments, article comments etc could all be combined under one profile. You could see people’s posting history, who they were friends with, what they were interacting with etc. At the moment the forum’s very separate from the rest of the site, but I’d like to tie it up more.
The best way to do it is to convert the forum to a different system, called bbPress, and install something called BuddyPress (the social network element which allows friend connects, extended profiles and so on).
It’d be a bit of a headache, and I’m not even sure if people would want it anyway, so I’ve not really pushed ahead with it. Also, bbPress isn’t as nice to look at as Simple:Press, though it can be customised. Then there’s the fact that any tinkering around the edges that I do here stops me from writing new articles, which was the real reason I founded this website.
What do people think? Good/bad idea? Don’t care either way?
I wouldn’t want a chatroom – too much trouble to moderate, too much potential for abuse.

I woulndt want the forum to become another Social Networking site, i detest facebook and all such places. I dont get why everything needs to be be together, why everyone’s every comment and move has to be lumped together and viewable for whoever wants to see.

Vaguely related to this, I have considered the possibility of creating a Skype group which is open 24/7 so people from the forum can chat when they’re online? Other forums I am a member of have done this and it’s quite a good way to increase the friendship of the members and provoke further discussion; plus as it’s external to the forum abuse isn’t an issue (and never seems to occur anyway really).

I’ve never used Skype. Wouldn’t it just mean people sharing their details in a thread somewhere? Would it require anything from me?

People can share their details by private message, assuming you can do that on this forum, and if I make the Skype group then they’ll send their username to me, I’ll add everyone and Beatles discussion can be had. It wouldn’t require anything from you, unless you should want to download Skype for free to join the chat (which would be nice). I just thought I’d clear it with you first as it was your idea to add a more social-networking side to the forum.
I don’t know how many people here use Skype or if it’s a bad idea on the whole, opinions would be valued

People can already add Skype details to their profiles (https://www.beatlesbible.com/f…..m/profile/). I don’t particularly want to encourage it any further in case people get daft and start abusing each other (if people think it’s an official feature then there might be similar moderation issues to having a chatroom, and I don’t want to go there). Feel free to start a discussion though – set up a separate thread if you want and see how it goes.

I’m with MMM and Mithveaen; I don’t like those social networking sites either. Anyways, we’ve already got the ability to send personal messages, don’t we?
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.
Yeah, I’m kind of inclined to keep things as they are.
In other news, the mobile-friendly redesign is coming along nicely. Still some fine-tuning and graphics to do, but hopefully it won’t be too long.
