I love the Anthology versions of And Your Bird Can Sing because of how they just start pissing themselves laughing, and Rocky Racoon, ‘sminking’ of gin…

The first time I heard ‘sminking’ was while driving. I was laughing so hard there were tears in my eyes. a-hard-days-night-paul-10I had to pull over.

It blew my mind out in my car.

I first listened to it in my history class, and guffawed out-loud and got kicked out! John would be proud of my behaviour. a-hard-days-night-john-1(Stick it to the man!)

Tongue, lose thy light. Moon, take thy flight… see ya, George!

Songs I love of the anthologies:

Free As A Bird

That’ll Be The Day

Norweigan Wood (This Bird Has Flown)

And Your Bird Can Sing

I’m Only Sleeping (Take 1)

Happiness Is A Warm Gun

Cry Baby Cry

What’s The New Mary Jane

I Me Mine

You know, just to name a few.

When I Twish And Shout, it makes the Girl say "What Goes On?", and than I say, "I do this Here, There and Everywhere", and than she finishes by saying "Honey Don't".

I really love the acoustic demos or first takes on the album because it makes you realize how hard it must have been to improve these songs because the demos are usually so good. The cd’s break down the Beatles to their simplest form and you get to see their progression.

On Anthology 3 – A capella version of Because .

I love this because you hear nothing but the harmonies.

It also drives me crazy, because (and this might be just me) it seems like the timing is a tad slow. I'll be singing along with it and I am always about a half second too soon coming in on the next line. Then, toward the end, I'll puposely wait about a half second later before coming in and all of a sudden, they are on time again and now I'm late.

Has anyone else noticed this? Is it just me? Do I need my meds adjusted?

To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

No, I know what you mean – it does sound a bit like they slow down a bit during certain intervals to me as well. Whether it's an auditory illusion or not, I don't know. Or maybe there are slight pauses because they only recorded a line or two at a time?

GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

Isn't the anthology version from '67? I think they just added to it when they finished it in '69. That's such a weird song, I usually forget about it but it's just so weird that the Beatles had a song like that in their catalogue.

Yeah, pretty sure it’s “what’s up with you?…Hah!”

Chollie, I’ve stitched the two versions of “You Know My Name” together into a 6:20 version that’s not quite the “definitive version” but it’s close enough. Download link is halfway down this page here:

That's the version they use in LOVE. (I think.)

The slowed-down-ness of it drives me insane….

:/

If I seem to act unkind, it's only me, it's not my mind that is confusing things.

I love the All Things Must Pass on Anthology 3 , I found George's solo version a bit slow and trudging. Also, the acoustic While My Guitar Gently Weeps sounds great back to back with the White Album version: the soft acoustic poem recital turning into a full-on rock 'n' roll song! Hell yeah!

You all will have read that Dave Dee is no longer with us. But Mickey and Titch and I would like to carry on the good work that's always gone down in number two.

Yes I definitely agree on the All Things Must Pass demo being much, much better than the final version on the ATMP album. It's much simpler, which is almost always better. No Spectorization!

Well, they're chronological, so it partly depends on whether your main interest is early, mid- or late-period material. Personally, I find the first one the least interesting because of the several live versions of familiar stuff, which is of limited appeal. Unless you're a big fan of recordings of screaming teenage girls!  The second one (my favourite) gives the best look at the recording process, since it includes a lot of demos, alternate takes and mixes, etc. And the third one's got a lot of White Album material, including a fair amount of otherwise unreleased songs.

My personal take on Phil Spector: An early-60s visionary whose way of doing things grew increasingly irrelevent as more people began listening to records on home stereo systems instead of AM car radios. (And yep, pretty crazy!)

If you are buying just one of them to start with, 2 is not a bad choice. It has some awesome early takes of SFF and ADitL.

vonbontee is right about 1 featuring a few screaming girl recordings, but I love it for the pre-Fab stuff like the first ever recordings, Decca demo, etc…

If you are buying it from Amazon, go there via a link from this site. Joe will get a little $ that goes toward keeping this ship afloat (server costs, etc…).

Happy Shopping!
