Studio 3, Wally Heider Recording, Los Angeles
Producer: Paul McCartney
Engineer: Alan O’Duffy
A mixing session for Wings’ fourth album Venus And Mars took place on 21 March 1975.
The album’s fourth song, ‘You Gave Me The Answer’, was mixed into stereo on this day, replacing unsuccessful attempts from 19 March.
Studio engineer Alan O’Duffy used a Pultec equalizer on Paul McCartney’s vocals, which gave the impression of a recording from the golden age of music hall.
That was designed [to sound like it was] recorded through a vaudeville microphone. You’re making a great singer’s voice sound thinner and squeakier – removing the warmth of the man’s humanity. You’re screwing it up, essentially. But it’s screwed up to give you an effect reminiscent of vaudeville.
