‘Let The Rest Of The World Go By’ is the final song on Sentimental Journey, Ringo Starr’s debut solo album.

It was written in 1919, with music by Ernest R Ball and lyrics by J Keirn Brennan. The song was first recirded by Campbell and Burr in October 1919, and released the following January.

Other versions of the song were recorded by artists including Joe Loss, Dorothy Squires, Frankie Masters, Vera Lynn, Harry Secombe, Ken Dodd, Rolf Harris, and Max Bygraves. A notable recording was by Dick Haymes for the 1944 film When Irish Eyes Are Smiling.

In the studio

Starr’s version was arranged by Les Reed, who on 12 February 1970 conducted a 31-piece orchestra in Studio Two at Abbey Road. Eleven takes were recorded, six in B flat and a further five in C.

It was decided that B flat was the key better suited to Starr’s vocal range, and between 9pm and 1am he overdubbed lead vocals onto take six. A stereo mix was made from 1-1.30am, but new vocals were recorded on 18 February. The song was finally mixed on 20 February.

Lyrics

With someone like you
A pal so good and true
I’d like to leave it all behind and go and find
Some place that’s known to God alone
Just a spot to call our own

We’ll find perfect peace
Where joys never cease
Out there beneath the kindly sky
We’ll build a sweet little nest
Somewhere in the west
And let the rest of the world go by

With someone like you
A pal so good and true
I’d like to leave it all behind and go and find
Some place that’s known to God alone
Just a spot to call our own

We’ll find perfect peace
Where joys never cease
Out there beneath the kindly sky
We’ll build a sweet little nest
Somewhere in the west
And let the rest of the world go by
And let the rest of the world go by
