Do we have a Danish forumpudlian?

New Denmark stamps feature Yoko Ono’s artwork

yoko-stamp.jpgImage Enlarger

The words “Dream” and “Smile” are featured prominently on the first stamps designed by Yoko Ono, an artist, musician, activist and the widow of John Lennon .

The designs also represent the sun and the moon, respectively.

These Danish stamps were issued Jan. 2 in a souvenir sheet of two. According to Postnord, the souvenir sheet is an “extension” of the “Yoko Ono: Transmission” exhibition at the Kunsthal Charlottenborg art gallery in Copenhagen. The exhibition opened Oct. 12, 2017, and runs through Feb. 18.

The gallery described the exhibition as exploring “the unique ways in which the artist transmits her profound messages of artistic philosophy and peace through numerous channels to reach people throughout the World.”

Each stamp bears a denomination of 27 krone, paying the new rate for international letters up to 100 grams. The rate went into effect Jan. 1.

The stamps are se-tenant (side-by-side) in the sheet.

On the stamp on the left, “Dream” is written on a symbolic yellow moon. The word “moon” is at the top of the circle and “Y.O. [Yoko Ono] 2018” at the bottom. Similarly, the stamp on the right features “Smile” on an orange sun.

The phrases “I Love You” and “We’ll Meet Again” are repeated in the background of the two stamp designs and in the selvage of the souvenir sheet.

According to the publicity image from Postnord, the last line in the selvage of the souvenir sheet also includes “Yoko Ono Spring 2018.”

An announcement about the souvenir sheet on Ono’s website included 10 questions with the artist about postage stamps and letters. (Here’s a link to the article mentioned: http://imaginepeace.com/archives/23239)

One question asked why she wanted to design stamps.

Ono replied: “Because I was always interested in stamps and how they looked, and whose face is on them. Usually it’s somebody very famous.”

She was also asked about the messages conveyed by the words on the stamps and in the selvage.

As for the “Dream, moon” and “Smile, sun” printed on the stamps, she said: “The message I want to give them is energy and power and this is the way I send a warm wish for it.”

Ono explained that the phrases “We will meet again” and “I love you” referred to whenever she thought about a person “we are meeting in the air.”

That’s awesome.

I just went through all 14 pages of the John Lennon section and while I found about 3 or 4 topics that involved Yoko Ono, they were specific (example, the Plastic Ono band, or the “Bed-In” incident, etc.).  So I created this because all I wanted to do was to post this pic of her posing for a photo with a famous 20th century artist, Ernst Fuchs.

Others are free to post anything they’d like about Yoko (that isn’t already covered by the other topics).

I confess I didn’t know who Ernst Fuchs was until recently, when I was Googling about another artist, Mati Klarwein (famous for painting what became the cover of Santana Abraxas and the Miles Davis album, Bitches Brew). In reading about Klarwein, it said he was profoundly influenced by Fuchs, so I looked him up. His bio is impressive, and his artistic genres were quite experimental and daring — he along with others started a new genre called “Fantastic Realism”.

Anyone interested in modern culture and particularly the history of modern art, as I am, would find the Wikipedia article on Ernst Fuchs a great resource: just take all the names mentioned there who influenced him or with whom he collaborated, and look them up.

Anyway, here’s a pic of Yoko with Ernst (close to his final years, I gather):

Yes, very interested in modern art too Pineapple Records, one of the reasons I like Psychedelic art is it’s influence from Art Noveau, Dadaism and Surrealism (including Fuchs and my favourite – Max Ernst).

One of my favourite psychedelic album covers is this one by Keiichi Tanaami; Japanese artist, known to Yoko Ono, responsible for this beautiful Jefferson Airplane album cover (in Japan)

In 1973 (2 years after the Imagine album) he created short animation piece for Lennon’s Oh Yoko! and it’s a little influenced by Yellow Submarine :

Saying too much here, but I love the subject of album cover art and the beautiful surrealist cover for the Mind Games album,  designed by John Lennon is terrific.

@Pineapple Records, the general Yoko Ono thread is in Yesterday And Today. https://www.beatlesbible.com/f…../yoko-ono/

If you’re in doubt, I highly recommend using the Advanced Search at the top of the page, or the Thread Search Thread. https://www.beatlesbible.com/f…..ch-thread/

Thanks Silly Girl. I never thought to look in the “Yesterday … and today” category. I know people say use Advanced search, but I always find it doesn’t help me (probably because I can’t figure it out).

Thanks to the admins who moved me, sorry to trouble you (you guys should be paid!).

@Penny Lane , thanks for that. Yes Max Ernst is a big name in the whole pop art movement.

This was discussed before and it was thought it should stay. I have no idea the reason for such a decision nor do I agree with it.

Since Yoko was John’s wife, that’s her connection to the Beatles, so it seems logical to put her under John (is there a Linda forum under Paul’s section?)

That was one of the arguments for, there were reasons against.

This is what I shared privately with @Ahhh Girl.

I actually thought the one that was already in the John forum didn’t belong there. Someone had to explain why it was there. Also, not everyone who is a John fan loves Yoko, so I think it might get more negative comments there.

Also, Yoko saw herself as an artist in her own right, not just John’s wife. Many of her detractors think of her as only being famous because she’s John’s wife. I think we should move all Yoko threads to off topic.

But @Expert Textpert, she is a Beatles-related person, so it’s right that her thread on a Beatles forum is here.

Just watch the Yoko appreciation thread turn into all bashing comments when it gets moved to the John forum.

I didn’t mean “off topic” necessarily. I just meant I think they should be moved to somewhere that is “not in the John Lennon forum.” I see that the appreciation thread is in “Yesterday and Today” (although I think it may have originally been moved from “off topic.”)

The one we are writing on now is in “John Lennon .”

The discussion here is about moving all the Yoko threads to the John Lennon forum because she was his woman, which I disagree with.

Since the majority of Yoko threads are already in Yesterday and Today, and most of the ones in John Lennon are to do with both Yoko and John (and if it is about Plastic Ono Band then it’s Yoko and John), I recommend that the following 3 threads be moved to Yesterday and Today:

Yoko’s Music

History of Yoko Screaming

What was the Yoko’s request about a million tweets (whatever that thread even is)

That would be the solution with the least effort required.
