First off, I’m pretty sure she’s not doing a Katy Perry cover. I think the Katy Perry music has been added.
What she is doing is called “hetai.” It’s a Japanese vocal technique from kabuki theater, and yes I do appreciate it, but I can’t explain why. I probably like it for the same reasons you hate it.

Unlike yourself I am not an expert on Kabuki theatre……But a Japanese friend informs me that there’s very little precedent in ‘hetai’ singing for what Yoko does. He seemed keen to distance her screechings from Kabuki…..and from using traditional ‘hetai’ as a way of justifying her ‘art’
But everything comes from somewhere……..So I have to agree with some of what you say….Though I would put the major influence….(my opinion) as being avant garde jazz, lack of any true ability and a need to be noticed whatever it takes!
Perhaps Yoko gets some of the negativity because the type of mainstream music fans the Beatles attracted (myself included) are not attracted to the ‘Avant Garde’ and would rather run a mile than be confronted with it. I may be wrong, correct me if I am, but i thought it was John himself who once said, “avant garde is french for bullshit” and George who said it meant…… ‘aven’t gorra clue?’
So it could be that the weight of negativity she has endured is due to the fact that Yoko’s famous because of John. if she’d never had met him and after her breakdowns and difficult relationships she had settled down, and had just done her own thing, in her own world she would either not be remembered at all today or she would have a tight circle of respecters and the praise you feel she deserves………’Cut Piece’ and ‘Fly’ seem well regarded…..
Guess we’ll never know.
I understand that we have to rise above taste and put all prejudice aside if we want to be uplifted by art….or great music. Perhaps it’s my failing that I can’t do that with Yoko’s ‘music’……Or it’s that her ‘music’ is just not capable of uplifting……..You might tell me that I’m wrong and that she uplifts you…
Each to his own………. The future will reveal whether she is ahead of her time and you are too or the sycophantic clapping she got at the end would have been different had a small boy in the crowd shouted ‘The King is in the altogether’
Don’t have the raving conniptions or take this personally but for me, my humble, unworthy opinion….. is that the noise she makes in this video sounds like I would imagine an exorcism to sound.
I found myself expecting her head to spin round.
As it is. I know from the ‘mods’ that enough is enough regarding our personal interactions over Yoko and that this type of argument can be divisive and sour the board’s atmosphere.
I’ll leave it there……..
All the above is my personal opinion.
I wouldn’t give a fly’s belch if Yoko was put out by anything I’ve said but I hope I haven’t upset anyone else on here…..You all seem a friendly bunch.

Okay. Final barbs have been traded. That’ll be quite enough thank you very much.
Going forward, it would be very much appreciated if EVERYONE can stop the personal attacks on each other. We can all agree that Ms. Ono is a polarizing figure, deserved or not. If you like her, great. If you don’t, great. I don’t give a s**t either way. What I do care about is members taking it out on each other. Some strong suggestions:
If you are going to accuse her of anything, cite sources (I have in the past).
If you are going to defend her, cite sources.
Do not bait someone into an argument.
Do not get baited into an argument.
Do not call someone’s personal taste, sanity or intelligence into question just because someone likes or dislikes her.
These Yoko threads are beyond childish. I am begging you to stop. Grow the hell up.

“Universally, Yoko’s P.O.B. album was seen as an extreme affront against propriety and possibly civilization! Something so revolutionary should have been applauded by the free-thinking radicals, but they were not as free as they pretended to be. There is a cultural context to Yoko’s vocal style on songs like “Why” and “Why Not,” that was derived from the operas of Alban Berg as well as from hetai, a style of straining your voice for a Kabuki performance, and just plain anguish. Her use of composing songs through improvisation was picked up from her jazz friends, Ornette Coleman and others. Originally released to almost universal disdain in 1970, critics now declare this album as laying the groundwork for the punk Revolution of 1976. David Browne, Entertainment Weekly, has credited Yoko with “launching a hundred or more female alternative rockers, like Kate Pierson of the B-52s to current thrashers like L7 and Courtney Love of Hole.”

Thank you for keeping those thoughts under wraps for now. Once some time has passed, you can make some comments again. This would be the correct thread for them.

@Von Bontee posted this pic in the RIP thread as tribute to Ornette Coleman. I think it is a very cool photo and a good one of Yoko. She seems to be truly getting into whatever is being laid down, so I thought I would duplicate the posting of the pic here for the Yoko fans. Looks like the show they are prepping for is on a Leap Day. Extra cool.
Great find, Von!

Thanks for re-posting, Zig…I was happy to find that a photo existed of that show, part of which is documented on Yoko’s POB album. (Can I just comment on the trumpet Ornette’s holding: he was really an alto saxophonist but he sometimes liked to experiment with trumpet and violin. Those avant-garde guys, you know!)

I’m a Sparks fan so I’ll be looking out for their song. The other one that caught my eye was Move On Fast by Yoko and Jack Douglas. It’s a song from Approximately Infinite Universe, which Douglas engineered, so I’m guessing this is a remix.
