This is a great topic and since I’ve always been interested in years and YOBs since childhood, let me explain. 1st generation fan means they experienced it firsthand whereas 2nd gen means they experienced it after the fact. Since we’re talking about The Beatles classic era (1962-1970, not their 1994-1996 reunion), anyone born after 1970 is immediately 2nd gen. Now the problem is how much of it did you have to experience to label yourself as a 1st generation fan, since someone born in 1969 or 1970 would’ve experienced very little first hand, skipped key events, and the stuff they did experience they did when they were too young to really be into anything, they’re immediately 2nd gen as well. On the other hand, someone born during or before 1960 would definitely be a 1st gen fan because they would have heard them from day one and would have known their songs which were being played on the radio constantly. So for someone born between 1961 and 1968, it’s their call. For example, if someone born in 1967 who liked The Beatles as a baby, listened to their music whenever it came on, and went to see the Yellow Submarine movie in theaters considers himself a 1st gen fan then he’s a 1st gen fan but if he considers himself a 2nd gen fan then he’s a 2nd gen fan.
