Thanks for your thoughtful response. So would you say the positive vibes were the main focus, or were the vibes just a byproduct of really good songwriters trying to get rich?

I posted this in the “Memorable Quotations” thread:

“You see, I have made a great discovery: I no longer believe in anything…; what I can only describe as a state of peace.” (Georges Braque)

Which reminds me that while falling asleep last night I remembered what I think The Beatles stood for and still stand for: being great musicians and making great music. The Beatles themselves said that first and foremost they were musicians.

They would have to be dedicated to their craft to be able to record the exquisite music that became the Let It Be album while going through all that turmoil during that period.

I wouldn’t say it was an either/or situation. Sure, they were brilliant songwriters trying to get rich (‘Let’s write a swimming pool’), but they weren’t in it purely for the money — they got into it because it was more fun than having a secure and boring job. They loved what they did, and it shows. They even manage to sound like they’re having fun on the 40th take of Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da a-hard-days-night-george-10

Ringo specifically said that even at the end of the band’s life, while they were still working, making the music was the most fun and the happiest time they had. The vibes came from them and the music they generated. Paul and Ringo still say that was the whole point for them, that happiness feedback loop. It’s just that it gives rise to something else as a response to that loop, whether it be money or fame or myth. You can argue what the focus was about for them because they weren’t in the loop continuously but the effect from the loop was ongoing and unstoppable. I can see how it can be separate for them but I don’t think we can ever appreciate that, no matter how industrious we are in tearing the response myth down. Objectivity about this can go a fair way but in the end we’re not them and vice-versa.

edit: i have this bad habit of repeating the same word in a sentence, removed the extra “evens”.

One of the most beautiful things in the Beatles myth (in my opinion) is that if you work hard, if you struggle, yo can make your dreams come true. They had this dream of being famous as musicians, thay wanted to be composers and get rich and so… They worked hard, and struggled and in the end they made it. They went from being four poor young boys to be super rich by doing what they liked best. And they did it without any musical knowledge, just by instinct and (good) taste…

So that’s what The Beatles mean for me: Work hard and never give up.

I think the Peace and Love and/or the revolutionary period were just casual periods in their lifes. They just were going along with their times

That is definitely there, and the same thing is true of Elvis and the American dream.  And with both Elvis and The Beatles you can see how the dream came true and then crumbled in different ways.

In both cases, I’m more interested in the heights of spiritual transcendence that was reached through the music. I think both Elvis and The Beatles touched something eternal and true.

Actually I think that’s assumed as part of other myths, progressiveness for its own sake. The Beatles could not stand still, every new work had to be different and have ‘movement’ as Lennon famously said. A later age may well view this as part of the naiveté of that era, as everyone wanted, and assumed, that everything would progress, it was a straining for novelty and exploration. But the “American dream” myth is a lot older than the 50’s/60’s, this was a burst of optimism that built on top of it.

There is a musical legacy of this where the Beatles are concerned, they definitely promoted the idea of artistic progression as the most successful example of it, it rather backfired on them in their solo careers. This gave rise to some extraordinary critical carping about Paul and George’s work (no one cared about Ringo and Lennon suffered a version of this too in his short-lived career), I recall reading an unnamed EMI exec’s complaint that they couldn’t stop Paul releasing crap albums. But that has begun to fade somewhat as the Boomers have decided that progression can mean many things particularly if they need it to!

I think the other myth we have to confront is that young, beautiful and talented means best and is the most saleable commodity. It’s certainly sold a lot of Beatles records since 1970, and has overshadowed a lot of good work from all artists, whatever their age. It’s a new thing we invented in the 20th century and it is very damaging.

I definitely agree regarding the damaging “young, beautiful and talented” myth. Steve Hackett is 66 years old and is making some of his best albums. There tends to be a music snob attitude in general that a musician’s best work is his earliest. When someone says that they prefer the “earlier albums” of any artist, I tend to just dismiss the comment.

Interesting point about the idea of progress, I hadn’t thought of that before.
