[snip]  I think his success added to John’s insecurities at the time.

Berry, berry interesting thought. I wonder if Lewisohn will cover this idea in V3.

I wonder if I will still be alive to see V3.

Indeed – not an original thought though I must add.  I read somewhere (can’t recall where sorry) that the combination of “Sometime in New York City” getting poor reviews and Paul doing so well with “Band On The Run ” etc. caused John a lot of anxiety – the two of them were always so competitive and it must have seemed that Paul was ‘winning’.

And on V3? Well, I hope so :)

[EDIT] oh, but this thought IS mine.  I have often wondered if Paul’s success and John’s perceived inability to match it at that time was one of the factors in the ‘lost weekend’ and the subsequent retreat from music for 5 years or so.

^^Thank you, BEAT a-hard-days-night-george-10, for the extra information. I’m only in kindergarten with my knowledge of all things Beatles

I’d rank their solo careers as follows:

1. Paul – Yes, most of his ’70s/’80s/’90s output was largely dismissed when first released (presumably because people blamed him for the group’s break-up, when he was merely the first person to publicly announce it  ahdn_paul_01), but it’s started to undergo a bit of a reappraisal over the last decade (and thanks in no small part to these reissues that are [VERY slowly] coming out  a-hard-days-night-paul-3) and most now agreeing that even his lesser albums aren’t all that bad.  But the guy’s never had trouble writing a song; even his most tossed-off numbers are still undeniably catchy.  And he’s really stepped it up from an artistic standpoint over the last 15 years or so, putting less subpar material on his albums, thus making them stronger.  Granted, unlike John and George, he has the advantage of still being alive  a-hard-days-night-paul-4… but still.

2. George, 3. John – Both put out some pretty good stuff, but both also suffered largely from ‘sameness’ in their respective albums.  They also both took a fair amount of time away from music prior to their deaths.  It’s close, but All Things Must Pass gives George the edge, considering it’s probably the best solo album any of them have ever put out to date.

4. Ringo – No surprise here, of course.  ahdn_ringo_09  Ringo will always be Ringo, always putting out pleasantly enjoyable – if ultimately inconsequential – albums with help from a lot of other people — the best of which being Ringo and Goodnight Vienna.

^

I agree on you with ATMP ..partially. I think Imagine certainly was in the same league.

I think MMM did a good analysis here.

This reminds me, I still have to buy YNGMYM. It was on sale somewhere on the interwebz..I saw.

I agree Imagine is John’s best solo album, but it’s still not quite in the same league for me as All Things Must Pass … or even Band On The Run … or Flaming Pie , Chaos And Creation In The Backyard and Memory Almost Full a-hard-days-night-john-7  But at least it’s not as overrated as John Lennon /Plastic Ono Band.

Them’s fightin’ words :)

I liked “Plastic Ono Band” so much I bought it separately even though all the songs are on the “Gimme Some Truth ” 4 CD compilation I have – just to hear it all together in one powerful run-through, and to have it sitting in its rightful place on the shelf.

^ Yeah, I definitely think it’s one of those you need to listen to all in one go.

I really like both ‘Imagine ‘ and ‘POB’, and don’t think they’re (how else to say this?) overrated/over-apreciated at all. There are some really fine tracks on both albums.

Hmm maybe not overrated, but still the most overrated John Lennon album.

I don’t even like it that much tbh, maybe that has something to do with it.

When people abbreviate albums I have no idea what they are referring to. Am I alone?

No. I haven’t been a fan long enough to get it all straight. I have a steep learning curve ahead of me.

Is that because of me? Sorry. POB – Plastic Ono Band.

I try not to do it because I know it can take ages to try and work some of them out. So long, in fact, sometimes I don’t bother and so don’t post to that conversation. Typing also takes ages though, and I try and save time wherever I can. Didn’t work this time, I guess :D

I suspect it was this one:

I have NO idea what that all meant.

My supervisor took one Look At Me at 4:00 this afternoon and said that I looked like I needed to take some of my sick leave and go home. I told her it was too late for today since I had only 30 minutes left. I told her I might take her up on the offer tomorrow.
