“My Boyfriend Got a Beatle Haircut” by Donna Lynn

I would bet that this was the “first ever” reference to the Beatles in a song.

(Recorded January 14, 1964…released February 10)

A comment on YouTube says,

“This Song Went To Number 83 On The Billboard Hot 100 Chart In 1964.”

…so it MUST be true!

I’d like to have my own Beatle haircut but my parents won’t allow it…a-hard-days-night-ringo-12

By hook or by crook, I'll be last in this book.

I would like to have a Beatle for Christmas too! I’d prefer four of them, but if I have to I’ll take Paul! Question is, how do you fit him in the box?

By hook or by crook, I'll be last in this book.

You just need a big enough box.

The sheer amount of Beatles knowledge among this group never ceases to amaze me. The Beatles force is strong in this space on the web.

The Beatles even did a seven second parody of it (‘All I Want For Christmas Is A Beatles’) during the 21st December 1963 episode of ‘Saturday Club’, you can hear it here (7 seconds into the clip).

I hear a rap song the other day and one of the lyrics was along the lines of “hoping a beatle comes out, but if so only Ringo”

Interesting.

Not quite sure if this counts, but this video does have a obvious Paul reference…

Nice one, @Starr Shine? . When I was very young, TDN was one of my favorite groups.

To the fountain of perpetual mirth, let it roll for all its worth. And all the children boogie.

I’m not sure if a bit in this Chameleons song counts as a Beatles reference per se, but they suddenly go into a certain song that would be familiar to all here about a minute or so from the end… There’s also a reference to John at the beginning. The Chameleons actually included parts of Beatles lyrics into a few of their songs, and I’m kicking myself at the moment for not being able to remember what the other ones are.

John Mayall’s cover of the Ray Charles song What’d I Say incorporates the Day Tripper riff into the song.

Do tribute songs count? I’m sure there were loads in the 60s. The best-known is probably Dora Bryan’s All I Want For Christmas Is A Beatle.

Last week I published this article about The Beatles holding the top five positions in the Billboard chart in 1964, and 12 singles in there altogether. I found out there were also two tribute songs: We Love You
Beatles by The Carefrees at 42, and A Letter To The Beatles by The Four
Preps at 85.

I just heard the song “A Letter to The Beatles” by The Four Preps today for the first time.

I always think of Frank Mills too. And Paul Simon’s tribute song. Other than that it just seems weird to me to mention the Beatles by name in a song, musical or lyrical allusions aside. Oh I forgot — there was The Dream Academy with Life In a Northern Town that mentioned them too and that felt crass even back in the 80’s (pretty crass song really).

Arrghh I see I’ve already been beaten to it by @Ahhh Girl but at least I can inflict the actual song on you all.

I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

The manuscript of American Pie by Don McLean is up for auction today.

The song was peppered with obscure and not-so-obscure references to various artists, including The Beatles, and deciphering it has been, over the years, one of popular music’s favourite games – especially as McLean refused to explain.

McLean, at one stage, had a different ending in mind for his song commemorating the death of Buddy Holly, revealed today:

And there I stood alone and afraid
I dropped to my knees and there I prayed
And I promised him everything I could give
If only he would make the music live
And he promised it would live once more
But this time one would equal four
And in five years four had come to mourn
and the music was reborn

I don’t think there can be much doubt, that in this rejected last verse, the main reference is to The Beatles arrival on American shores, and its effect.

Holly died in February 1959. The Beatles landed in February 1964: “And he promised it would live once more / But this time one would equal four / And in five years four had come to mourn / and the music was reborn“.

It may have been abandoned, it may be a lost reference, but at one time McLean saw the song’s ending as a tribute to Four Lads from Liverpool who shook the world.
