@Joe, did you get your St Vincent record? Have you had a chance to listen to it?

@Ahhh Girl I got it yesterday, but I haven’t had time to hear it yet. I’m glad it’s finally with me! Her last album seems to be topping a lot of end-of-year lists, which is as it should be.

I also bought a Bob Dylan 9xLP box set that’s currently changing hands on eBay for £300-400. There were only 1,000 copies made – it’s another of those copyright-extension releases. I paid £100 and yes, I am going to flip it. Sorry Dylan fans, I’ve become one of those people. I didn’t even plan to buy it till I was in the record shop and saw it behind the counter.

What do you mean by “yes, I am going to flip it. Sorry Dylan fans, I’ve become one of those people” @joe? I’m not understanding that.

He’s going to re-sell it. He isn’t going to keep it.

It is like buying a house just to fix it up to sell it. You have no intention of living in it for very long. There’s a t.v. show here in the US about people doing that.

Ah, I don’t like that. Because , you, by finding this fantastic set for a great price with no intention to listen to it, but instead to resell it for more than you bought it for? You’ve robbed a huge Dylan fan of the chance to find something they’ve been looking for for a long time for a fantastic price, with every intention to listen to it until their ears bleed. That’s not cool. Though that’s just my opinion, do whatever you want.

You’re right. I’m not particularly proud of it. In mitigation if I’d left it in the shop it’s more than likely it wouldn’t have gone to a Dylan fan anyway – there are people going around the country searching for these because they’re valuable, and because shops aren’t supposed to sell them online or for more than the RRP. I saw an opportunity and took it, the same as if I spotted a Picasso print in a second-hand store and bought it to sell on at a higher price.

FWIW the recordings are supposed to be pretty patchy, in musical and recording terms. It’s mainly the rarity factor that’s making this desirable. Sony doesn’t even want people to buy this, hence the extremely limited run, no fanfare and no info on which shops would stock it. But I do accept your comments and I probably won’t do it again.

That’s definitely valid. I probably wouldn’t have done the same, but that definitely makes sense. I didn’t know about the Sony thing (I’m not a Dylan fan so I hadn’t really been keeping track).

This week I am working at my local record shop in preparation for Record Store Day. I’ve been pricing things so I’ve seen most of the releases.

There are quite a few copies of The Family Way ! If anyone wants a copy and either can’t get to a store or wants to support the friend of a ‘bibler, it will be up on Amazon on RSD.

I’m not sure if I’m going to get it, but there’s a cool Hendrix 45 (I believe it was on purple vinyl) that I’ll probably be getting.

I don’t know if this is the kind of thing they advertise, or if it’s secret, but…

…one of the sets of Dylan’s Basement Tapes is on pink vinyl.

This was the first RSD I actually bothered to leave the house for. I dragged @Ahhh Girl to a couple of Cardiff’s record shops. The first one had a fairly sizeable queue, so we went to another one a short walk away which has only recently opened, where there was no queue. I bought a Roxy Music 10″, The Zombies’ RIP LP and a Suede live album (Dog Man Star, Britpop nostalgia). AG got Rings Around The World by Super Furry Animals on CD, which wasn’t a RSD release but is brilliant nonetheless (and has Paul McCartney chewing celery on one track).

Then we went back to the first store and the queue had died down a little. I bought Get Behind Me Satan by the White Stripes, and John Grant’s BBC Philharmonic album (one of the two things I really wanted – the rest were impulse buys). Neither store had the Father John Misty 7″, which was the other thing I was after (there were only 500 available in the UK). I’ll wait a couple of weeks and get it on eBay or Discogs.

The Family Way LP wasn’t released over here, otherwise I’d have probably bought it too. I spent too much money though!

Yes.  It’s a reference to the classic Beach Boys song Vegetables where Paul McCartney makes a guest appearance rhythmically chewing celery.

The SFA song is Receptacle For The Respectable. McCartney did it as thanks after SFA remixed the Beatles for Liverpool Sound Collage . And yes, it’s a reference to the Beach Boys song Vegetables.

He’s in the instrumental bit after the lines “Subtle as a nail bomb in the hand, you came to me in peace and left me in pieces”:

Black Friday Record Store Day today. Was going to post pictures of the Say Say Say records Wednesday before they were released but didn’t have space on my phone.

A few other cool releases for today. A BB King 10″, a previously unavailable Hendrix album with some early versions of Cry Of Love songs I believe, and the Howlin’ Wolf London Sessions with Clapton, Steve Winwood, and Charlie Watts.

I hope that’s coherent, but don’t really wanna rephrase anything. I have some online deals to attend to. a-hard-days-night-george-10

I went to a nearby record store with me mum today, and she got 2 33s (not RSD releases but vinyl nonetheless). I, on the other hand, purchased a David Bowie The Man Who Sold The World picture disk (you know, the one with the German album art on the vinyl).

Needless to say, I am a very happy camper! a-hard-days-night-john-1

I didn’t the Bowie for the person who wanted it. Lucky you, WeepingAtlasCedars. They are selling on ebay now for about $70+. I think ebay should put a one year moratorium on RSD records. a-hard-days-night-john-7

I did get three for people who requested them…and one for someone who didn’t need to request. heart

For my household, we will be listening to the Bee Gees, Elvis, and the ?? (mystery) RSD 7-inch album. Both of the clerks at the record store asked me if I wanted to know what the ?? was or if I wanted to wait and be surprised when I opened it. I opted for the surprise route. They both were grinning from ear-to-ear and said that it was by far their favorite record put out today. Guess I’ll find out in a bit what it is.

My friend was unable to score me a Bowie picture disc, as well as the things she wanted because the guy at the store near her was too late putting his order in. 🙁

It’s the 45rpm version of Two Virgins . Exactly the same as the 33-and-a-third version, only faster. You don’t have to suffer so long that way!
