I put it off for forever (mostly because I found Black Tie White Noise too enticing — one of the few out-of-chronology listenings I did in my initial listen-through of his discography), but when I finally got round to it I found it was actually quite good — I liked it, anyway. Rock ‘n roll, man. TL;DR by all means @QuarryMan.

Great, thanks @Beatlebug ! Would rock n roll be a good descriptor for the style of music?
“While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I’m a naysayer and hatchet man in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I’ll gladly take another - because I choose to live my life in the company of Ghandi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love. I love you, Sheriff Truman.”

Yes, very much. Doesn’t sound like 1989 at all, really.

Oh I dunno, I thought it sounded 1989ish enough when I bought it back in the late fall of ’89!
It was compared at the time to Lou Reed’s “New York” album, and also to Sonic Youth; and those are the basic outlines of the sound: noisy (or at least loud) pair of guitars and a rhythm section. Arty hard rock that’s often quite deliberately ugly. It’s interesting, but I found it ultimately forgettable (after 30 years!) “Working Class Hero ” is an odd choice to cover, and I didn’t enjoy the result, but I guess YMMV.

@Joe, I tried to post a comment under an article on the Bowie Bible, and the ‘I am not a robot’ captcha wouldn’t let me submit the post even after I checked it. It just lingered there, blocking my access to the post button.
Thank you. I’ll remove that now.
