I’m the opposite of you. I believe that in The Beatles, Paul was the best at writing songs and as a solo artist John was :P

For example, I prefer And I Love Her , Yesterday and Lady Madonna over I’m Only Sleeping , Help ! and Across The Universe

However, I prefer Jealous Guy , God , and Real Love over Maybe I’m Amazed , Band On The Run and Live And Let Die

A side note; I’m aware that the rest of The Beatles helped with Real Love , but John wrote it

Favourite band: The Beatles
Favourite song: Yesterday
Favourite album: Rubber Soul
Favourite member: Paul McCartney

I think you can’t do a John versus Paul. The Beatles were a unit and each Beatle had input into how the songs were constructed including George and Ringo. When I listen to their music, I don’t have a favorite Beatle or song. I just listen to the music and enjoy them for what they are.

If we are talking solo career, then that is a different issue.

Beatles – about equal overall across the entire period – I think John started stronger though.

Solo – unfortunately John was cut off prematurely and had a long break; I started off liking John’s albums more but on listening again felt they were both great (and also like George’s and Ringo’s output over that time) – so I guess I can’t give a definitive answer just yet :)

I will be listening to all the early solo stuff again in the coming weeks so will see if my perceptions have changed any since I last listened over 20 years ago.
