I need to get Winn’s books, the only problem is they’re so freaking expensive, even on Amazon, and I’m not sure how much new material is in them that I don’t already have in other books?

I got the first two as gifts (which i asked for as a christmas present), both sensibly priced (about £20 each), and got the third as a pdf for a little less and printed it out.

I find them to be invaluable resources which contain so much stuff i haven’t seen/read elsewhere. Fabulous alongside Lewisohn’s reference books as they correct some of the errors in those yet also add more details to what Mark wrote.

It really is difficult to call one way or another.

Louise is claiming George was demanded for the rehearsal. We know that is wrong. Neil and Vince stood in during the rehearsal.

It is claimed that George made an appearance at the end of the afternoon. Part of that is based on what they are wearing, with the most distinctive bit of dress being Ringo’s black/dark shirt.

However, if you look at the rehearsal photographs I posted, the later rehearsal on the 8th – with Vince holding George’s guitar, show Ringo in white shirt and tie.

I will admit I don’t know, and the photographs are no help at all!

I have asked a better authority than me if he could help out, if he responds I will let you his opinion.

We have two sources who had access to the Beatles at the time writing at the time that George was there on the 8th, turning up late. I fail to see why its difficult to accept he was there.

Just an observation here Joe’s history page doesn’t mention George being at the theater at any point on the 8th. Wonder if he might rethink his entry if he reads through this lively conversation. The way he has it written, he doesn’t really need to change anything. Again, just an observation/rambling on my part.

Jewish Business News interview with Albert Maysles. Hilariously, they manage to spell his last name three different ways in the same article. [x-posted the the documentaries thread]

50 years ago today, the band played two 25-minute Carnegie Hall concerts (note the misspelling of “Carngie” at the bottom of the poster).

Interesting article from Ultimate Classic Rock, where some of those Americans who were wiped from the charts due to The Beatles and the British Invasion reflect on the growing buzz in 1963, and what happened in 1964 and after.

Thanks for the article mja. Never before had i made the connection between The Beatles and Tommy Roe who sang the Dizzy (which was bettered by Vic Reeves and The Wonder Stuff).

Belated thanks! Although it turned out to be a celebratory weekend (with some nice Beatles-related presents I might add), I’m old enough to know better than behave as you say!

I am really enjoying the 50th anniversary hubbub. It was only mid 2013 that I started liking the Beatles, and now that I am a full on fan, I get to see and point out all these newspaper articles, songs on the radio, and magazines and share my quickly gained trivial knowledge (and annoy my friends with my many “This day in history” posts on Instagram). If I had been a year later in my discovery of them I would have missed out on the celebration!

Missed it by a day (or two depending on your time zone), but fifty years ago on 2 March the Beatles began filming A Hard Day’s Night .
