Here is what would happen if they didn’t meet,

With out Paul holding him back, John would of became ultra famous with the Quarrymen back in 1957 and topped the pop charts beating out Elvis by a land slide.

George and Paul would then form their own pop group with Pete best and become “The Pete Best Band” and become the number one rival for the Quarrymen in 1962.

Meanwhile, Roy Storm and the Hurricanes have already become a mainstay in the pop charts back in 1960.

With out John to ward Paul from Black magic, He mails the Quarrymen a package full of black magic hexes!

Thankfully, Ringo without the Beatles to stop him becomes a super wizard and saves John from the hexes and turns Paul and The Pete Best Band into rocks and rolls them down a hill.

And the Quarrymen and Rory Storm and the Hurricanes live happily ever after, making a million hits each on all the pop charts.

I can see John going nowhere. I think the Quarrymen would have split up after their enthusiasm tailed off and the skiffle scene died, and he eventually got a job on the advice of Aunt Mimi.

Paul, on the other hand, I can see having a similar career trajectory as David Bowie. He would have tried on a number of hats, had a few failed attempts at riding on the back of scenes, tried his luck working in musical theatre/performing arts, then eventually struck lucky a few years down the line with a brand new persona and a strikingly original sound. I think he had the nous and ambition to go further on his own.

That gives rise to the equally interesting question of who needed whom more–John or Paul.  I tend to agree with @Joe, and no, not just because he’s my idol.  Don’t you think John needed that structure, drive, and constant presence of a melodic genius and sounding board?  And didn’t Paul need the imagination, creativity and irregular presence of a lyrical genius and sounding board?  It just seems like John could have been easily distracted and diverted from a musical life without Paul’s overbearing and nagging personality.  It’s hard to imagine Paul adrift without music.

I say in speeches that a plausible mission of artists is to make people appreciate being alive at least a little bit. I am then asked if I know of any artists who pulled that off. I reply, 'The Beatles did'.

John is creative……..but lazy……….Lazy dynamite it could be said.

All four had guts to do what they did………But remember it wasn’t just for the music. ‘Money for nothing and your chicks for free’ was a massive incentive. The competition too….. to be the best group was perhaps first before the competition to be the best Beatle. John was competitive……To the topper most…

Paul would have made it sure.

John would have too.

John needed Paul’s more advanced musicality to bring out his own talent, both musically and lyrically. Paul needed John’s edgier personality to influence and partner him. They each brought out the best in the other.

John might not have got there surrounded by lesser talents, but with Paul he flourished and shone. Paul had the ability to be with any of the bands of that era and achieve something, but meeting John was the best prize of all. John was a rough diamond who needed polishing. Paul was already there but he needed a partner like John to take him in a different direction to where he might otherwise have headed.

When the pair co-operated and competed, they both benefitted massively – and so did we.
