george-martin Here’s something which sounds like it’ll be good:

Sir George Martin in conversation with Andrew Marr

On 28th April 2010, Sir George Martin, legendary producer of the Beatles, will be in conversation with Andrew Marr, leading political journalist, at a unique event in aid of Deafness Research UK.

This event takes place at 7.30 pm in Kings Place, one of London’s most prestigious new performance venues (located just a few minutes walk from Kings Cross and St Pancras stations).

Tickets are £75 each. There are also VIP tickets available for £125 which include a pre-interview drinks reception with Andrew Marr from 6.30pm, a signed photo of Sir George Martin which he will personally dedicate to you, and priority seating.

This special event promises many fascinating insights into the Beatles’ recording sessions with George Martin at the famous Abbey Road studios. There will be an opportunity to bid for auction items donated by both Sir George and Andrew Marr, including one stunning piece of Beatles memorabilia.

With tickets for this intimate event strictly limited and selling rapidly, you will need to secure your place quickly to avoid disappointment.  For further information and to book tickets, please call Deafness Research UK on 020 7833 1733 or email tickets@deafnessresearch.org.uk

I mentioned this to my lovely wife and she offered to buy me a ticket for my birthday (two days before the event). So I phoned Deafness Research UK who tell me they’re collating names to send to George’s people, and should be able to get dedications on the signed photos for all VIP ticket holders (they can’t guarantee it but she thought it wouldn’t be a problem for those who buy tickets now). What a birthday present!

DR-UK also say the auction will take place only on the night, so there’s a chance to snap up something good. No info on what the ‘stunning piece of Beatles memorabilia’ will be – I’ll report back when I find out. george-martin

blue-meanie Why don’t I live in England!?

Sounds excellent, Joe-
have a great time for all of us, we’ll be living vicariously through you!

(Sorry all for the huge absence on my part… went to Europe for March break! Now I’m positive I don’t belong here in Canada since I’ve seen it first hand… time to move!)

Tongue, lose thy light. Moon, take thy flight… see ya, George!

I admittedly love a good rain! I’m not one for perpetually sunny days… I need a spritz here and there!
And thanks everyone- had a wonderful time. I went on a fashion trip with about 14 girls from my school; we went over to Paris, Florence and Venice. Ah, if only I were back!

But no internet access would have been the end of me! a-hard-days-night-ringo-6

This is tomorrow. If anyone can make it to London tomorrow evening, there may still be £10 tickets available, which seems insanely bargainous to me. Info here: http://www.beatlesnews.com/blo…..artin.html

I guess sales were slow at the full price, and they want to get the numbers up. Either way I’m sure George will have plenty of fascinating things to say, and hopefully not the usual stuff he says in interviews:

(This is from Big Train, a comedy sketch show that aired around 15 years ago. It was written by the people behind Father Ted, if that means anything.)

Ha-ha! That voice is excellent! It sounds exactly like what he says and I’m sure he’ll say it all again.

OK, so I’m back after this. I’ll post a full report when I get a moment (it’s been a crazy couple of days, I’ve barely had time to stop and think).

George was in good form. He spoke for about an hour. Although didn’t say masses that hasn’t been heard before, it was fantastic to be in the same room as him. I made some notes straight after and I’ll write up what he said.

After the talk there was an auction of various items, including three signed George Martin box sets (which went for £1,000 each), Ringo’s signed All Starr snare drum head (£1,800, I think), and a lithograph of the Yesterday score (£10,500). The score looked amazing – it was fascinating to see it up close. At the top it said “Yesterday , by Paul McCartney , John Lennon , George Martin and Mozart” – I think in Paul’s writing. The lithograph was signed by McCartney and Martin.

Bidding in the auction was high (I wasn’t tempted to buy anything; nor could I really afford to), and there were a lot of well-to-do charity patrons and supporters in attendance who seemed keen to bid as high as they could.

Oh, and Paul McCartney was there, in the front row, about five seats to the left of mine! He left before the auction began. It was good to see him and Ringo support the charity with their donations and help, as it’s clearly close to George’s heart. a-hard-days-night-paul-5

Sweet:

A report from the evening is here: https://www.beatlesbible.com/2…..search-uk/

I’m sure there’s a lot of stuff I’ve forgotten, as I wasn’t taking notes at the time, but there’s a flavour of what was said.

JOE YOU INHUMANLY LUCKY MAN!

a-hard-days-night-ringo-6 Unfortunetly there isn’t a smiley that will justly reflect my envy! George Martin and Paul in /one/ day, and in one /room/ of all things!? Wow, I think you’ve attained godly status in my eyes!

The lithograph sounds wonderful… me want! -sigh- Oh, being a far-away Canadian.

I’ve got a very small version of the lithograph that I’ll try and scan in when I get time, but the finer details won’t be visible.

But yeah, lucky doesn’t cover it. I need to get a frame for the pic now. Those auctioned items were going for silly amounts of money last night, but a VIP ticket with a dedicated autograph could be had for £125 (still a fair bit, but worth it to be breathing the same air as two living legends).

Paul looked in very good health, by the way. He seems to get more sprightly each year.

Incidentally, I’m out of here until Wednesday, spending four nights in Berlin from tomorrow. Skye is your new moderator, keeping the peace with a safe pair of hands! Be good x

Thanks very much for sharing your evening with us. What an opportunity! I share Alissa’s frustration of living on the wrong side of the pond.

Here’s a 10-minute video from the night: http://www.guardian.co.uk/musi…..in-beatles

Some of the related clips on the right-hand side might be of interest too – Klaus Voormann, Peter Blake etc.

This is only slightly related to the thread topic, but I thought I'd add it anyway. This link (http://fanmail.biz/mboard/view…..8;t=175614) turned up in my referral stats, meaning it was pointing to this site.

I'm not sure whether I agree with this kind of autograph-collecting-as-industry, but if anyone wants to get in touch with Sir George, there you are.

(SASE is a self-addressed, stamped envelope. LOR is letter of request. If you write one, do try to brighten up his day rather than just ask for something – I'm sure he'd appreciate it more.)

Apparently Paul doesn't send out autographs: http://www.fanmail.biz/1113.html
