There’s a new Dylan biog/memoir by his former road manager Victor Maymudes. Rolling Stone has some extracts and info. Here’s some Beatles-related stuff (and please get in touch if you buy a copy – I’d like to know more about that night in 1964).

The night Dylan met the Beatles was kind of awkward.
Maymudes provides one of the most complete accounts of the famous summit, at the Beatles’ New York hotel on August 28th, 1964. “Bob tried to roll a joint and it fell to piece in his hands,” Maymudes says, “scattering pot over a bowl of fruit sitting on the table.” Victor took over and rolled the joints himself. That helped liven up the party, but Dylan, who’d been drinking, passed out on the floor within an hour. “The following morning, Paul came up to me and hugged me for 10 minutes,” says Maymudes, ‘and said, ‘It was so great, and it’s all your fault because I love this pot!'”

George Harrison was pissed off about Dylan’s 30th-anniversary concert in 1992.

The all-star show at Madison Square Garden was widely believed to be for charity. It was actually for profit. “Harrison was so angry, he made T-shirts with dollar signs on them and sent them to me and Bob,” Maymudes says. “George also got in trouble with Olivia, his wife. She tracked the last number he dialed on the hotel phone to a limousine company that I had arranged for him to use to send a limo for a girl he was involved with. When Olivia blew up over that, I found myself in the middle of the confrontation.”

From Beatlefan:

MPL has confirmed that Macca’s “Hope For The Future ,” the theme song to the new Destiny game, will be issued as a single. Here’s their news release:

He has written countless hit singles, orchestral scores, released electronica albums, film theme songs and changed the world with his music. Listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the World’s Most Successful Composer and Recording Artist of All Time, Paul McCartney has now added another first to his impressive list. No stranger to being involved with hotly anticipated releases, Paul has now entered a new genre all together.

This week saw the release of the most expensive and highly anticipated video game of all time – Destiny. Ten years in the making, Destiny is the biggest entertainment property of 2014. Earlier this week, fans were queuing through the night to get their first glimpse. Stores across the world opened early in order to meet the demand. Made by Bungie and Activision, the team behind Halo and Call of Duty, Destiny is expected to change the gaming industry. The hype surrounding this release demonstrates how the gaming industry has overtaken Hollywood.

The continuing success of this market and the scale of Destiny is further underlined by the fact Paul McCartney has written the game’s end title theme song Hope, as well as working on the soundtrack. Throughout his career, Paul has always looked at ways to reach new audiences with his music and has never been afraid to try out new ideas or platforms. This is the first time that Paul has ever written for a computer game and he has likely started yet another trend for the world of popular music. Paul teased fans with a tweet in 2012 confirming that he was working on a project with Bungie but this week, following the game’s release, the wait was over for fans when Hope started to appear on the Internet.

Produced by Giles Martin, Hope is as epic as the game itself. Following the positive response and reaction to the leaked track it is confirmed today that the track will get an official release later in the year with more details to be announced in the coming weeks.

Cool find AG, tho no idea how you remembered that.

Live performances of ‘She Loves You ‘ and ‘Money (That’s What I Want)’ from the Swedish radio show the Beatles recorded on the 24th October 1963 are being released as a single by the Italian record company Kutmusic reports Wogblog. In total the Beatles performed 7 tracks and whilst the other 5 were included on ‘Anthology 1 ‘ in 1995 these two were omitted and eventually fell out of copyright at the end of last year.

*considers making a thread for this new Macca song*

From this site

…If so, and if McCartney really didn’t take a payment for this work, you could argue it’s a noble effort to introduce a new generation to the work of McCartney and his band, The Quarrymen.

Seriously, THE QUARRYMEN. Or am I missing something?

An update on Paul’s video game music for “Destiny”:

Sir Paul McCartney Composing Video Game Music

Bungie, the developers of the beloved Halo franchise, revealed a heaping stack of new information on their otherwise hushed game project “Destiny” this Sunday.

While that seems of little importance to the music world, there is an interesting guest aiding in the soundtrack composition for the game.

Regular fans of the franchise would be familiar with the composer Marty O’Donnell for his monolithic contributions to the previous Halo soundtracks, but this time he is getting a little help from rock n’ roll legend, Sir Paul McCartney .

O’Donnell has been working with McCartney for roughly two years, creating the early soundtrack at the very Abbey Road Studios of Beatles fame. This collaboration has allowed McCartney to expand work with new melodic constructions and themes.

O’Donnell said this about McCartney: “He didn’t only want to do Paul McCartney music. He wants to get involved in themes, how melodies and motives can be a touchpoint for people.”

O’Donnell also commented on the cool factor associated with working with the former Beatle. In their discussions, O’Donnell mentioned that things like the looping on “Tomorrow Never Knows ” are similar to what makes interactive music interesting.

O’Donnell mentioned of McCartney that “He said ‘I’m gonna get that [looping] machine out of my closet and send you some stuff,'” and so it turns out that some of the game recordings have been done with the very same looping machine used on Revolver . Fun fact if you ever find yourself playing it one day.

So what’s your take on all this? Is McCartney better off making “Paul McCartney music”, or is it good that he is branching off into new fields?

parlance

Wow, @parlance posted about this song back on p. 12 of this thread (26 Feb 2013)

To celebrate the release of The Apple Years 1968-75 box set, Olivia & Dhani Harrison are giving filmmakers the opportunity to make a music video for one of George Harrison ‘s most loved songs, ‘What Is Life ‘.

More on this link http://genero.tv/georgeharrison/

I’m thinking to make the video. But I have to think ’cause I don’t have a proper idea. Anyone else thinking to participate?

Some Los Angeles-based George-related news:

* The George Fest concert on September 28 has been moved to a bigger venue due to the demand. It’ll now be at the Fonda Theater and more tickets go on sale Wednesday at 10am. *fingers crossed*

* According to The Examiner, Conan O’Brien will be dedicating next week to the Apple Box release:

TBS’ late-night show “Conan” announced Monday it will feature a special tribute to George Harrison the week of Sept. 22 with appearances by Dhani Harrison, George’s son, Beck, Norah Jones

I haven’t found specific dates for musical guests, but tickets for tapings to Conan on the 23rd and 24th are still available via 1iota.com

* And the Grammy Museum will host a screening of Wonderwall on Oct. 2. Tickets go on sale Wednesday at 10:30am:

Following the screening, The GRAMMY Museum’s executive director Bob Santelli and Emmy-nominated music journalist and TV writer David Wild will discuss the film and George Harrison ‘s music.

As Dhani said on Facebook, it’s a total Dadfest. :->
