Anyone in New York this weekend? ;->
Previous unheard Beatles recording to be unveiled this weekend
A previously unreleased and never before heard Beatles recording will receive its first ever public airing during Peter Asher‘s upcoming “A Musical Memoir of the ’60s and Beyond” shows at the Iridium in New York on Jan. 20, a musician connected with Asher told Beatles Examiner Wednesday.
According to the source, the recording “has never been heard anywhere before, not on bootleg, on radio, anywhere.” The song is reportedly connected to Peter & Gordon.
More at the source.

Someone needs to get a recording device and let the rest of Beatledom hear it. Rare beatles recordings should not be held back and heard by only a select few.
Edit
Rolling Stone reports it as being ‘World Without Love’. Seriously, nowadays you can pick up high quality recording devices that are incredibly small as well as being able to do so on smartphones and numerous other devices. Someone has to get this – heck they managed it in 1982 for the Abbey Road Video Show when tape recorders were far bigger and bulkier.
And on the same tape there is a version of I’ll Follow The Sun . Flippin’ heck.

Thanks for that link. I see Peter will also be touring to Chicago, Minneapolis, and Clear Lake, Iowa, over the next few weeks. Maybe someone here will catch it?
Edit – fixed the quote:
A little more news at the Examiner, namely:
And then I remembered he had made a quick tape on my machine to make sure I had the melody (of “World Without Love.”) It’s literally about 20 seconds long, one verse.

Announcement by the BBC that they are going to do a various artists re-recording of the Please Please Me album on 11 February to mark the 50th anniversary:
Mick Hucknall and The Stereophonics are among artists attempting to re-record The Beatles’ Please Please Me at Abbey Road on the album’s 50th anniversary.
The musicians will have just 12 hours to complete the work, mirroring the marathon single session that resulted in the Beatles’ debut album.
They will use the same studio, with all the tracks recorded in order.
The event, which takes place on 11 February, will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 2.
It will also be filmed for a BBC Four special called 12 Hours to Please Me, which will be screened on 15 February.
The event is to be hosted by Stuart Maconie and Jo Whiley, who will be joined by guests from the original session 50 years ago, including engineer Richard Langham and Beatles press officer Tony Barrow.
The show forms the centrepiece of a series called The Golden Age Of The Album – a two-week celebration across BBC Four, Radio 2 and 6 Music.
Richard Klein, controller of BBC Four, said: “I’m thrilled to be celebrating The Golden Age Of The Album across both television and radio.
“We’re taking a look behind the scenes of a really exciting moment in popular music history when some of our most iconic albums were recorded, and trying to discover what are the essential ingredients that make an album great.”
Should be interesting. They tried this a few years back with Sgt. Pepper , and had artists walking out and saying they couldn’t do it. Wonder who gets the short straws of “I Saw Her Standing There ” and “Twist And Shout “? And will they include the four single tracks that weren’t recorded on the day?

Some Ringo and Paul news:
1) WogBlog:
Bill King of Beatlefan just revealed that Hear Music is planning a “june-ish” release of the remastered “Wings Over America “, and that it will include the “RockShow” concert film on DVD, as well as what’s described as “far more bells and whistles” than any of the other Macca archive releases to date. King promises more details in Beatlefan/EXTRA! #317…
2) Paul’s afore-mentioned BBC Radio 4 interview can be heard here.
3) From MSN Exclusives:
Watch a 30 minute film in which members of the McCartney Family speak about Linda, her influence on them and how they are continuing her legacy. Also includes wonderful commentary from people who knew Linda including Elvis Costello and Chrissie Hynde. The film is a very personal look at how Linda touched the lives of people she knew, interspersed with beautiful photography of her and the McCartney Family.
4) The Powerpuff Girls’ are coming back to Cartoon Network, Ringo Starr to perform:
Very interestingly, former Beatle Ringo Starr will appear in the episode and perform an original song titled “I Wish I Was A Powerpuff Girl.” He’ll also play “Townsville’s most famous flamboyant mathematician Fibonacci Sequins.”
5) Ringo Starr 2012 show at historic Ryman coming to DVD
Ringo Starr‘s 72nd birthday show last July 7 with his All-Starr Band at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium will be released on DVD March 19, it was announced Tuesday.

Cast of Beatles play ‘Backbeat’ to give free live show at Hollywood record store
The cast of “Backbeat: The Musical,” which opened earlier this month at the Ahmanson Theater in Los Angeles, will give a free performance of music from the show at Amoeba Records in Hollywood on February 4, Rhino Records announced Monday.
The cast will also sign CDs of the “Backbeat” soundtrack just released by Rhino Records.
The 20-track CD features four songs written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney and other songs covered by the Beatles both on record and in their pre-fame days in Hamburg, where “Backbeat” takes place. The collection features cast members Daniel Healy (Paul McCartney ) on vocals, guitar and bass; Andrew Knott (John Lennon ) on vocals and guitar; and Oliver Bennett (Pete Best) on drums and vocals.
Leanne Best, the niece of former Beatle Pete Best, plays Astrid Kirchherr in the production.
BTW, a friend of mine took me to the opening last night, and it was great! Fun, but at times heartbreaking. Leanne Best and the actor playing John, Andrew Knott, in particular were amazing. Different enough from the movie, I believe, to warrant seeing (though I admit it’s been almost 20 years since I saw it).

There’s a fascinating interview with Ken Mansfield, the former US manager of Apple Records at the Daytrippin’ blog, as Ken has just released a new book, Stumbling On Open Ground: Love, God, Cancer and Rock ‘n’ Roll. I like the high school analogies he uses to characterize the guys.
I also didn’t know they almost reformed Apple in the 80s.

Article on Jim Berkenstadt, author of a new book on tracking down Jimmy Nicol:
It is tougher than ever to disappear these days — the Internet has seen to that — but Jimmie Nicol has given it a go.
It’s harder still because Nicol had one brief flash of blazing fame. It was half a century ago, but it was real. For 13 days, in June 1964, Jimmie Nicol played drums with The Beatles on a world tour, while Ringo Starr was hospitalized with tonsillitis.
[…]
Berkenstadt’s tracking of Nicol took him to London and Australia, and he will only say he has solved the mystery of whatever happened to Jimmie Nicol to his own satisfaction. The answers are in his book, available at http://www.thebeatlewhovanished.com. Berkenstadt will sign copies at an event at 6:30 p.m. March 1 at Genna’s Lounge.

Ticket To Ride: Abbey Road station notice Beatles tribute goes viral
Fans of The Beatles arriving at the capital’s wrong Abbey Road are being directed to the right location thanks to a helpful sign from Transport for London (TfL).
Scores of tourists have been turning up at the Abbey Road station in West Ham expecting to find the iconic zebra crossing made famous by the renowned Liverpool band.
However the real crossing, featured on the cover of the band’s 1969 album of the same name, is actually 10 miles away in St John’s Wood.
To help ease the confusion, TfL have created a light-hearted notice featuring some of The Beatles’ most famous song titles.
The notice was spotted by freelance music journalist Tom Hasson who posted it on Twitter before it went viral.
TfL told Metro.co.uk it hopes Beatles fans who end up at the station will be able to see the funny side of their wrong location mistake.
‘Some visitors to London have been taking the name of the DLR station as indicating the location of the Abbey Rd recording studio made famous by the Beatles and their album, Abbey Road ,’ a spokesman said.
‘This poster displayed at the station will help them find their way to where they want to be.
‘We hope the humour in it may help alleviate their dismay at finding themselves so far off course as they realise they are not the only ones to have made the mistake.’
In 2010, the world famous zebra crossing was given ‘listed’ status by the government.
