Kite, I don’t think that will work. If you were to do posts 5,10,15,20,25 etc., and I were to do 6,11,16,21,26 all of yours would show up together in order (then mine all together) unless you and I and the people doing 7,12,17,22,27 (and so forth) were doing them at the same time and in order. The posts are dated and timed. Someone has to do a block (10,11,12,13,14) together or those posts won’t be together. That’s why it is sometimes very hard (if not impossible) for the mods to merge threads. We can’t move posts around as far as their dates and times. So if we were wanting to merge a thread into another one, we have to make sure that the inserted posts don’t break conversations up into gibberish.
Let me know if that makes sense. If it doesn’t, I will try to re-explain.

I am proud to be a part of this wonderful group of people.
I have all the files copied onto my flash drive also. Lots of backups so you don’t have to worry, @meanmistermustard. We’ve got your back.

I like the idea of a separate discussion thread (and maybe that should be in Getting Better section?) . I strongly think this should be post-by-post for easy reference and in case someone wants to quote one in the future.
If we get 8 people to help then we can easily divide the pages in chunks of 5-6. With about 20 posts per page (save where a few posts here and here have been lost), this averages out to about 100-120 posts per person of copying and pasting, which I think is doable.

I’m thinking that keeping the Notes/discussion thread in the same section as the actual Dreams tread while the project is ongoing would make it easier to find. They would probably remain very close together in the list of unread topics and in the topics list view in the Y&T section. When the dust settles, then we can move the Notes/discussion thread to the Getting Better section.
mmm can decide how he wants to handle it.
Did you have a good time at the BBQ, @parlance?
I’m up waaaayyyyy too late. I am going to try to go to sleep now.

As I have said, I am happy to reconstruct what we have. I have done it before.
However, however it is done it needs one person in charge, either doing it themself, or assigning pages to people and telling them when to post their contribution. That is the only way to avoid getting it completely out of order. We cannot have a bunch of people doing the page they choose, and end up with page 1, followed by page 19, followed by page 30, followed by page 2…
We can recreate the thread, but we can only do it if one person takes it on, or if a bunch of wait to post their bit until they’re told to post it by someone putting the pieces back together again. However it is done, and we can do this, it has to have one person calling the shots, and guiding it so we get it back in the right order.

Yes, mmm realizes that this is work that must be done by one person, or at least one person at a time. In his first emails to me today when we were first trying to figure out what to do, I suggested the wayback machine and mmm found 32 pages of the thread there. He started reconstructing the thread post-by-post before he hit a snag when he realized all the posts on each page were not there and that some pages were missing. During the time he was copying and pasting, he emailed me to ask if there is a way for a mod to “hide” a thread while they are working on it. We can’t. (During that time, I was calling Ron Nasty to see if his laptop had saved the pages like it saved that page/thread for me in May.) This shows us that mmm knows this is very delicate work that we are going to be doing.
Note to mods in case you don’t know this: After we lock a thread, we can add one post before we leave that page. But once the page has refreshed we can’t add another post. I was thinking we could add more. I guess I had added one one time and didn’t remember the thread locking up on even me after the page had refreshed.
So, back to where I was before that mod note…mmm delete all the reconstruction work he had done and replaced it with links he had in post 1. He, parlance, and Annadog40 found good cached pages of each page of the dreams thread. I wish I had been of more help. I was out of pocket and couldn’t sit down and concentrate on the project. Kudos to the three of them!

As for how to go about getting the posts back without chaos – my favoured option is that folk are given a set amount of pages to work with (evenly split) and they do so in their own thread which is clearly titled what it is, the post numbers and that no other folk are to post in there – if they let the mods know they have to do other things then we can even lock the thread. The mods can then (hopefully) edit those back in in the correct order, deleting each individual thread when its merged leaving no headache for Joe in the long term.
It might look and sound unsavoury but it means the volunteers can crack on with it when they have the time and no one is hanging about waiting to do something. It also avoids one person getting lost and wasting their time on doing a post that has already been done.
I’m very happy to listen to other ideas. I’m taking all this from how i organise my iTunes catalogue when it goes hay-wire.
If there is 6 of us willing to help then that is 7 pages each but i’ll happily take more on when my pile is gone.
With the Wimbledon final and the World Cup on today i’ll keep going for the meantime.
Just remembered, posts are time-stamped. However one way to get by that may be to ‘stick’ each post in the thread – the first five here are out of sync time-wise.

@meanmistermustard, I wish your method would work, but I don’t see how it can. Please let me know if there is something askew in my thinking here.
If I were to start a new thread right now and do posts 70-80, with you stopped where you are on post 28, then you came back in 4 hours and picked up with post 29, when my thread is merged into yours, posts 70-80 would be inserted between posts 28 and 29. I don’t know of anyway to get around that date/time stamp.

I think we would have set times to work on our threads like when MMM is done with their 6-7 threads then the next person would start their thread

Yes, @Starr Shine?, I think you are right.
@meanmistermustard when your eyes need a break in a little bit, see which of us who has volunteered to work on the project is logged on. Ask them in this thread if they are ready to take over. Monitor the first few posts they do, then let ’em have at it.
From there, we could go two ways.
1. The person could PM you to let you know they have finished for the time being so that you can pick the next person
*OR*
2. if another volunteer is online at the moment, the person finishing up their shift could ask the next person via PM (and add you as a recipient also) if they are ready for a shift (even a short one) and let that person take over. If so, the person finishing up their shift should monitor the first few posts of the upcoming volunteer to makes sure all is going o.k.

@Ahhh Girl See the beginning posts of this very thread. Anna’s post from the 4th July is #6 whereas Parlance and your posts from the 5th July are all 1 – 5 as they are pinned. Pinning them kept them from moving down and being automatically sorted by the time and date.

If you want to do some of the copying and pasting then i’m happy for you to take over until you get fed up – its quite tedious work. I’ve been on the laptop for the last few of hours and could do with a break.
Let me know and i’ll let you know where i’m up to.

@Starr Shine?
Apologies for not replying promptly. Once i’ve started i plough thru the page till its done.
Pages 1 – 3 are done. Let me know when you get fed up, need to go, need a break, got any questions and i’ll get back to you asap. I need to go out for a while around 3pm but will be back for 5pm for the football so will do some then.
A general note to all. If when you are copying posts in and one is missing can you write in that post slot that its missing believed lost. Means that if we do find it down the line its an easy job adding it in.

Ah, RN was explaining this post-pinning thingy on the phone to me, but I guess it was so shiny and new it made me go glossy-eyed, and I didn’t get it. I admit I still don’t get it fully. Can we use this with other thread merges (like the ones I thought were impossible to do because it would break up conversations)?
I have a lot to learn.

I don’t know AG about moving pinned posts to other threads. I doubt it would work as they arent bunched together. Certainly if they are pinned in a thread any subsequently moved posts go after.

@Ahhh Girl A locked thread is no barrier to a mod posting on it. Should a mod need to post on a locked thread, unless Joe has changed it since my day, enter the locked thread, go to your mod tools, unlock it, post, go back to mod tools, relock. Simples!
