I’m currently wrestling with a dilemma. I might like Bob Dylan more than the Beatles. What do I do?

I wouldn’t call it a dilemma, I mean what does ‘favourite musician’ mean after all? It’s not as if one gives one’s favourite band a vow to always remain loyal or whatever. For me, and I think it’s actually the case for most people, musical preference comes and goes in phases. One time you have a Beatles phase than you have a Dylan phase, a Pink Floyd phase, a Beethoven phase, a Justin Bieber phase,… it’s fluent like everything in life and sometimes a bit of distance is even beneficial in the end to see things from a new perspective. I admit I’ve had some weeks this year in which I just didn’t feel like listening to Beatles and obsessed over Pink Floyd instead. But each time, when I returned to the Beatles sometime later, I had felt that I could appreciate them from yet another perspective now that I have discovered other things and my love for the Beatles had even grown.

All I’m trying to say is, the music is there for YOU not you for the music, so onto your question: what do you do? Just listen to the music you feel like listening to the most and don’t feel guilty about the things you enjoy – even if it’s not the Beatles you enjoy most. It’s not a competition. And besides, even when the Beatles are your second-favourite band, I’m sure you’re still a bigger Beatlemaniac than many, many fans out there – and that’s neither good nor bad, that’s merely a fact.

Currently, Led Zeppelin has jumped onto my number two, Pink Floyd follows on the third place, and Jimi Hendrix on the fourth position. Beatles are still my number one.heart

Not once does the diversity seem forced -- the genius of the record is how the vaudevillian "When I'm 64" seems like a logical extension of "Within You Without You" and how it provides a gateway to the chiming guitars of "Lovely Rita. - Stephen T. Erlewine on Sgt Pepper's

@Martha, thou hast stolen my words
I admit I’ve had some weeks this year in which I just didn’t feel like listening to Beatles and obsessed over Pink Floyd instead. But each time, when I returned to the Beatles sometime later, I had felt that I could appreciate them from yet another perspective now that I have discovered other things and my love for the Beatles had even grown.

ahdn_george_06
I admit this has happened to me a good deal as well. And possibly Led Zeppelin too, although, while I have a Whole Lotta Love for Led Zepp, I don’t think it quite approaches my adoration for either the Beatles or Pink Floyd… but it’s pretty darn close.

Anyway, @sir walter raleigh I understand if you feel a bit guilty or disloyal about loving Dylan more than the Beatles, I’ve gone through such phases as well with Pink Floyd. I was in denial for ages and ages before I could even allow them to tie with the Fabs. But it’s okay. As long as you love the Beatles, it really doesn’t matter whether you’re wrong you’re right where you belong you’re right where you belong.

The Beatles would approve, anyway; they were all massive Dylan fans, as I’m sure you know! john-lennon-salute_gif

Haha I thought you’d’ve said Phish for P!

I’ve found that B, M, and S are where the most treasures are.

GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

Wouldve loved to pick Phish but they’re competing with all of the Petes and Pauls as well as Pink Floyd

@QuarryMan What a fantastic array of bands/artists you’ve chosen there.

Limiting myself to bands/artists where I own at least two studio albums (otherwise I’d be here forever). Also, blame iTunes for solo artists being under their first name

A – Aberfeldy, Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys, Aretha Frankin, Athlete.

B – The Band, Bat For Lashes, The Beastie Boys , The Beatles, The Beautiful South, Belle & Sebastian, Ben Kweller, Bill Ryder-Jones, Bjork, Blur, Boards of Canada, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley & The Wailers, Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, Brian Eno, British Sea Power, Broken Records, Bruce Springsteen, The Buzzcocks.

C – Camera Obscura, Charles Mingus, Christine & The Queens, The Clash, Cocteau Twins, Coldplay, The Coral, Courtney Barnett, Crosby Stills and Nash (and Young), The Cure.

D – Daft Punk, David Bowie, The Decemberists, Devon Sproule, Dexys Midnight Runners, The Divine Comedy, The Doors, Doves, The Duckworth Lewis Method, Dusty Springfield.

E – Echo and The Bunnymen, Editors, Eels, Elbow, Elvis Costello, Eminem, Everything Everything.

F – Fairport Convention, Father John Misty, Field Music, A Fine Frenzy, The Flaming Lips, Fleet Foxes, Fleetwood Mac, Florence & The Machine, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Frank Sinatra, Frank Turner, Franz Ferdinand, Funkadelic.

G – Girls Aloud, Goldheart Assembly, Grinderman.

H – Haim, Half Man Half Biscuit, Hefner, Hole, Hot Chip, Hot Club de Paris, The Housemartins.

I – Iggy Pop

J – The Jam, Janelle Monae, Jay-Z, The Jesus and Mary Chain, John Grant, John Lennon , John Martyn, Johnny Cash, Joni Mitchell, Joy Division.

K – k.d. Lang, Kanye West, Karine Polwart, Kate Bush, Kendrick Lamar, King Creosote, The Kinks, Kraftwerk, KT Tunstall.

L – The Last Shadow Puppets, Laura Marling, Led Zeppelin, The Leisure Society, Leonard Cohen, The Libertines, Lily Allen, Lou Reed, Low Anthem, Lykke Li.

M – Madonna, Manic Street Preachers, Marvin Gaye, Maximo Park, Michael Jackson, Miles Davis, Muse, My Latest Novel.

I’ll save N to Z for another time.
