Whats this talk of “throwaways?!” Only A Northern Song pure genius, especially in context. Hey Bulldog is widely regarded as one of the most underrated Beatles Songs.

Same as AHDN , Help , MMT, its a soundtrack album. Just because this one isn’t pure pop doesn’t mean it isn’t an album.

I didn’t mean that they were bad, but they were throwaway songs as in they were songs that the band threw away and then pulled out for new songs in the YS movie.  I personally love that YS original tracks.

No it doesn’t, it is a split album with side A containing 5 new (and 1 old) Beatles songs and side B containing George Martin songs and out of those 5 new songs, 1 was previously released as a single, 3 of them are rejects, with Only A Northern Song being a Sgt. Pepper reject and All Together Now and It’s All Too Much being MMT rejects, and Hey Bulldog being recorded specifically for the movie (odd considering the scene was dropped for it’s US release) and therefore split album. We can label their material like so:

A poll:

[sp_show_poll id=”209″]

I say no because not all of the songs on here are performed by The Beatles.

If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

To clarify, when i mean that, i mean do you consider it to be an album in the same way that Please Please Me , With The Beatles , A Hard Day’s Night , Beatles For Sale , Help !, Rubber Soul , Revolver , Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band, The Beatles, Abbey Road , and Let It Be are. For example, i consider 1967-1970 and 1 to be Beatles albums but not in the same way as Revolver and Abbey Road so i wouldn’t count them.

Why not just enjoy the Yellow Submarine album without thinking thoughts about it?

It’s hard to enjoy this split album because half of it is classical music that isn’t by The Beatles and i also love thinking deeply into things.

That’s certainly not a bad thing, classical music is great

that isn’t by The Beatles

Not necessarily a bad thing

and i also love thinking deeply into things.

Even thinking about things like ‘I wonder why ants are so small?’?

(IMO, YS counts as an album.)

I’m not a big fan of classical music, i’d much rather listen to The Beatles, especially on what’s supposed to be a Beatles album.

You got me curious about why ants are so small.

If we’re talking the official canon that was created in the 80’s by Apple then yes, otherwise it’s in the grey area with Capitol Mystery Tour.

Quarryman said in another thread
Two (or more, i’m not sure) of the tracks weren’t even recorded specifically for Yellow Submarine .

I thought i’d move the off-topic conversation to a more appropriate thread.

Anyways, correct me if i’m wrong but i’m pretty sure that Hey Bulldog was the only song record specifically for the Yellow Submarine film.

This would mean that Yellow Submarine is:

2 previously released tracks

1 previously released on an album (Yellow Submarine , previously released on Revolver in 1966)

1 previously released as a single (All You Need Is Love )

3 studio outtakes from previous sessions

2 Magical Mystery Tour rejects (All Together Now , It’s All Too Much )

1 Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band reject (Only A Northern Song )

1 new track specifically recorded for the film (Hey Bulldog )

And a bunch of George Martin Orchestra songs, making this sort of GMO’s 6th UK album.

This means out of the entire Yellow Submarine album, only 1 out of the 13 songs is a Beatles song specifically recorded for the movie.

To answer the original question, no it does not. Dark Overlord pretty much just proved it, as only 1 of the songs was recorded specifically for the project. Same goes with Magical Mystery Tour . It’s a compilation, not a studio album as such.

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

In ranking the 13 canon albums I have placed Yellow Submarine at #13 saying of it: “Challenges the format. Delivered with a minimum of fuss. Pleasing to the ear.”

Unless Paul McCartney knocks on my door I am unlikely to be impressed.
