I do not get the hate for this album, it’s definitely not their worst! There are too many underrated songs on here also, Don’t Bother Me , a great overlooked song, Please Mr. Postman and You’ve Really goy a Hold on Me. Fantastic covers. So, what are you’re thoughts on the album.

The Incedibly True Story THat Never Ends. By Sam.

Is With the Beatles underrated? I don’t have a feel for these things. I know I say it a lot, but I can’t overstate what the Beatles cartoon did for my appreciation of their early albums. Just looking at the songs I gave 4 or 5 stars on my iTunes playlist, many of my favorite Beatle songs come from this album:

It Won’t Be Long (love this spirited opening for the album)

Don’t Bother Me (one of my favorite George songs)

Hold Me Tight (yeah, yeah, I know how most people feel, but I love the groove)

I Wanna Be Your Man (as someone being forced to listen to classical, hearing this always takes me back to that first moment of being blown away by a rock song)

Not A Second Time (something about that moody piano gets me every time)

A really good album killed for me by Hold Me Tight , I hate knowing that that is coming up. Not sure its the most underrated, i’d give that to Beatles For Sale .

I love this album! It is pretty underrated.

Also, I don’t want to sound like an idiot… but I’ve only heard Hold Me Tight a few times. Is it the one that goes “Hold Me Tight … something something blah blah… you, you you you”? I don’t remember… paul-mccartney

Also known as Egg-Rock, Egg-Roll, E-George, Eggy, Ravioli, Eggroll Eggrolli...

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8Yes, but I don’t mind listening to Paul’s voice that way, especially with that young voice.

Yip. And the others sound like their going thru the motions. To be kind its got a bouncey rhythm track – doesnt change the fact i think its the worst piece of music the Beatles have ever put out officially.

The covers are really good and most of the album shows a growing maturity and confidence in their playing and songwriting in the studio. It is definately a step forward from Please Please Me and nowhere close to the dodgy second album that plagues so many artists.

I could name at least 20 songs before I’d get anywhere close to HMT being the worst they ever put out officially, IMO. I couldn’t fathom why so many people hate it so much, but now I’m beginning to think it’s because it’s unexpectedly mellow despite its bouncy groove. It’s just unique, and I think it throws people off.

You’ve only heard HMT a few times? I’m surprised.

It’s certainly not one of their best, and I think it’s the worst on the album, but I don’t understand why most people seem to hate it that much. Is it really that bad? I don’t think it sounds ”beatley”* but I quite like it.

*I know you can’t say that the Beatles had one particular sound, because they didn’t, but when you compare it to other songs of the more pop-y kind from the same period, it sounds different IMO.

My main problem with WTB is that I don’t get much of a sense of album “flow” out of it, primarily because I don’t think “All I’ve Got To Do ” was a great choice for the second song. I’d have been happier if that track and “All My Loving ” had switched places. All the other early Beatles albums begin with two uptempo ones followed by a slow one; WTB sandwiches the slow one between the two fast ones. Not as satisfying to my sense of showmanship.

Paul: Yeah well… first of all, we’re bringing out a ‘Stamp Out Detroit’ campaign.

I see what you did there.

I even like the Across The Universe movie rendition of it

I forgot about that one. I liked the arrangements on that soundtrack, but the auto tune is killing me.

I realized at seeing this thread that I don’t listen to this album very much.  I have it on now, and I’m just like “Why don’t I ever listen to this?”  a-hard-days-night-ringo-13

"Please don't bring your banjo back, I know where it's been..  I wasn't hardly gone a day, when it became the scene..  Banjos!  Banjos!  All the time, I can't forget that tune..  and if I ever see another banjo, I'm going out and buy a big balloon!"

With The Beatles is my favourite album! I love Please Mr Postman and You Really Got A Hold On Me , I think they’re the best covers the Beatles did. Oh, and Devil In Her Heart . As for the originals, All I’ve Gotta do is the most beautiful Lennon Beatles song, It Won’t Be Long is just awesome (surely I’m not the only person who joins in with the “yeah”s?), and I have a weird obsession with Little Child (the way they sing “lonely” just gets me)…and there’s All My Loving , and Don’t Bother Me …ah, dammit, its just such a great album.

I think the main reason I like it though is that its fun- its not as polished as AHDN and everything that followed, its just four mates having a laugh. And becuase they’re enjoying themselves, you enjoy it to.

Sorry that was a bit of a rant. I just really really love it.

The songs on this album are among some of the first I listened to on yt after listening to the ”1” album, so whenever I put it on, I’m taken back and am reminded of those cold winter nights two years ago when I would look forward all day to getting in and just searching ‘The Beatles’ on youtube, and then that wonderful feeling. There’s nothing like listening to a new Beatles song that you’ve never listened to before.

Anyway, ‘WTH’ most underrated album? Possibly. ‘BeatlesFS’ isn’t talked about a lot but I think it’s their weakest. ‘WTB’ is actually quite good IMO.

Not my favourite but certainly not my least favourite.

The only songs on it that I REALLY don’t like are Little Child -But then again I hate harmonica’s so that may be it- and Roll Over Beethoven .  And You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me kind of depresses me for some reason.

For the rest it’s pretty good. Yep even the covers and Hold Me Tight .

WITH THE BEATLES was the first Beatles’ album I ever heard, so I’ve always had a lot of affection for it — and I agree it is probably underrated.

Ranked against the rest of the group’s catalog, I’d probably put it right in the middle.

I think some of the Beatles’ best covers are on this album:  “Roll Over Beethoven “, “Money”, “Please Mr Postman”, “Til There Was You” and “You Really Got A Hold On Me ” (although I’m not very fond of “Devil In Her Heart “).

Of the originals, “It Won’t Be Long ” & “All I Gotta Do” are pretty good;  “All My Lovin” and “Don’t Bother Me ” are excellent (best songs on the album, I think);  and “I Wanna Be Your Man ” is a fun Ringo tune.  Okay, I’m not all that crazy about “Little Child ” or “Hold Me Tight “, but they’re not bad.  And I’m never quite sure how I feel about “Not A Second Time ” — sometimes I skip it and other times I think it’s great — maybe I’m allergic to aeolian cadences.

Overall, a pretty good album — and I LOVE the cover photo!   Their first iconic album cover.

I've got nothing to say, but it's okay..

GOOD MORNING!

The Please Please Me album cover was pretty much standard fare for the time. With The Beatles was where they really started breaking the mould so far as the artwork was concerned.
