I'm on first listen of the new mix. So far there is remarkable clarity. I'm hearing things I never heard before. The drums sound crystal clear.

I was able to hear backing vocals on several tracks that I hadn't picked out before.

The Beatles YT stream on the WA begins in around 15 minutes.

Could the White Album be made today?

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the White Album , Matt Everitt, Giles Martin, and a panel of journalists, broadcasters & artists discuss how the album has influenced musicians.

In a world of snackable content, playlists and short attention spans, would an artist dare release such a diverse body of work now?

The Panel:

Giles Martin (Producer)
Georgie Rogers (BBC 6 Music / Soho Radio / Foundation FM)
Dan Stubbs - (NME)
Felix White – (The Maccabees / Yala! Records)
Miles Kane - (Artist)
Andy Bell – (Ride)

It's an interesting discussion, and Giles is pretty amusing.

I watched this last night.......

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Worth a watch by any fan. Might watch again before delivery day.

The two things learned for me was that the flamenco guitar intro to Bungalow Bill was played on a synthesiser, (same machine that was used on the Strawberry Field's intro).........That's from Giles Martin.....And also from Giles the debate about whether it's Ringo or not on 'Dear Prudence '......He says, 'Not'

That should settle it......But I've a feeling it won't.  I recall Ringo saying there's only one Beatles song (with drums) that he didn't play on and that seems to be accepted as, 'Back In The USSR ' .....Maybe he added some fills after his holidays. I'd like to know because the drums on the ending sound so good and so Ringo on 'Prudence' If it's the 'Paul Ringo human synthesiser' at work.......Big credit to Paul.

Oh yes, also learned from Giles that his dad liked Revolution No 9.......First time I've heard that.

Giles can get things wrong sometimes. For instance he claims 107 takes of Sadie I read here somewhere that they called one take 'take 100' for a joke so as I say...Not settled.

Lots of love for the album......Appreciation of its 'sprawl'...... I've always been grateful for it being a double. Now it's even bigger. So excited.

On the eve of the release, I know beforehand that the Giles Martín remix of the White Album will be my prefered version, and actually the definitive versión. There's no way on earth for a hurried 1968 stereo mix to be better than a 2018 stereo mix. It's just as simple as that.

This is pretty shortsighted, in my opinion...  just because Giles inherited the same DNA as the undisputed "5th Beatle" doesn't automatically make him someone who can simply mess with greatness and so easily dismiss "a hurried 1968 stereo mix"...  his work on the 'Love' project (or, whatever it was called) makes this Beatlemaniac just a little more than skeptical...  'Love' rivals 'Let It Be - Naked' (is he also responsible for that farce?!) for Worst Apple Endeavour Ever...  Bar None...  the "1968 stereo mix" was Revolutionary (pun intended) and has yet to be topped in Popular Music, with the possible exception of 'Abbey Road ' (as Giles' father originally intended it)...  a Great Song or, Great Album for that matter, don't need no "remastering" and "re-mixing"...  the Artists' original vision will sound through on a simple transistor radio, without the Producer's Son's authorized interference...  I'm sorry that you've become so bored with the 'White Album ' after all of these years...  some of us haven't...:-)

There was already a mono and a stereo version, so what's the harm in creating another version? It doesn't mean I'm bored if I enjoy it. You can listen to whichever one suits your mood (or not).

Point taken....I'd forgotten that. Though the way he expressed it it was as though he was saying John contributed the repeated machine gun three note, 'da da da' under....... 'look' 'all' 'love'

More questions?? But still an enjoyable broadcast.

I enjoyed hearing John's 'Travis picking' along to Goodnight. Preferred it actually.

Apparently based on Bing Crosby + Grace Kelly's...... 'True Love' ....John always seemed here to me to be saying to Paul, 'If I want to I can do granny shit music too you know!' The yucky, schmaltzy arrangement I thought deliberately overdone...Almost as an apology to the mums and dads for the discordant, sound-experiment that preceded it.

Who knows?

I'd say that the 1968 stereo mix is not the one the Beatles/George Martín cared about back in the day. And that's undisputed, because they always said so. And, using your words, just because George Martin was known as the 5th Beatle, it doesn't mean his work can't be bettered.

his work on the 'Love' project (or, whatever it was called) makes this Beatlemaniac just a little more than skeptical...  'Love' rivals 'Let It Be - Naked' (is he also responsible for that farce?!) for Worst Apple Endeavour Ever...  Bar None...

That's your opinion. I think his work on Love, is excellent. That is a soundtrack album for a Cirque de Soleil show, and he did it with his father, by the way...

I'm sorry that you've become so bored with the 'White Album ' after all of these years...  some of us haven't...:-)

I could never be bored with the White Album , because MUSIC is what matters and, believe me, it will sound better. You can listen to the original stereo mix forever, if you want.

Same for me. It's better than Pepper but a bit too bombastic.

I'd have to disagree there, JA. In my opinion, the White is the point where they switched to the stereo being the important mix. The last 24 hour session for the album saw them concentrating on the stereo, while the mono was largely made up of mixes that were made as they went along, with the mono mixes they made on that day largely concentrating on songs they'd decided to crossfade during the stereo mix.

Unlike Pepper, where there are many comments from the band and their associates that the "mono" was the mix, I've never seen or heard any such comments regarding the White.

OK, J Alesait, you really dig the 'Love' project but throughout Beatland you're clearly in a minority there...  that "hurried 1968 stereo mix" of the 'White Album ' continues to outsell 'Love' year after year...  yeah, I know Sir George Martin helped out on the project but advanced hearing loss was also a big factor in his involvement...  the 'White Album ' is a finished work of art, and it's 50 years old...  the interest in celebrating its legacy is staggering and shows that it's stood the test of time...

"hurried" doesn't mean that they shoulda spent more time on it...  they wanted to wrap it up and capture it while they were still hot for it...  if you simmer things too long it eventually deteriorates...  I believe that The Beatles themselves realized this at the time and wanted to deliver the best album that they could...

Apologies for not jumping on the Giles Martin bandwagon...  I hear him goin' on about how much fun they were having making this record as though the people who were there and close to The Beatles at the time made up all of the stories about the tension between them...  now he's trying to tell us that that's not Ringo playing the fills on 'Dear Prudence '?!  how the hell would he know?...  people also seem to forget that his father was only one of, what?  9 different production credits for the album?  did he not abruptedly leave before the sessions were even halfway through?

This all wreaks of Apple's continued mandate to "revision" The Beatles' legacy...  if the new mix is so much better than the original, why not sell it on its own?  because it wouldn't sell...  it's the unreleased goodies that are selling this package...  sure, if you put the new mix on a new state-of-the-art sound system it's likely to sonically sound better than the original will, but how many Beatles' fans actually even own such a system?  and even those who do probably don't use such a rig for most of their listening pleasures...  the vast majority listen on modest to cheap (for lack of a better word) audio devices and that's where the "hurried 1968 stereo mix" will outshine anything new, everytime…  they weren't looking to please a handful of elitists back in 1968...  just their loyal fans...:-)

Not a big fan of remixes but i'll be checking out this one when i have time. Doubt it will be any better than the 1968 mono or stereo mixes, it'll probably be on par with the Sgt. Pepper 2017 stereo remix.

If you're reading this, you are looking for something to do.

They began switching to stereo at this point, but finally did it when the eight-track mixing desk was fully available

I've seen many such comments on the White Album and how the mono mix was the prefered version. I don't have the sources right now to quote the exact comments
