The Beatles have already set their sights on the next expanded reissue project after this month’s look back at Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Producer Giles Martin, son of the late Beatles collaborator George Martin, confirms they’ll focus on the the band’s 1968 self-titled release, better known as the White Album.
He admits that the task is far more daunting this time – despite the fact that the upcoming super-deluxe Sgt. Pepper’s set includes a whopping 100 minutes of outtakes, many previously unheard and unreleased.
“The White Album , which is the next release – that is where they started becoming indulgent,” Giles told the BBC in a new interview. “There are 70 takes of ‘Sexy Sadie ,’ for instance. The efficiency went slightly out the window. There’s a lot of stuff. So, it’s getting the balance right.”
That said, Martin finds the process meaningful, no matter how long it takes. “It’s really trying to sort of humanize it in some way,” Martin said. “That gives you added respect. We’ve convinced ourselves that singers don’t really sing, and producers do it – or it’s all done with buttons and faders. But, really, it’s down to them performing in the studio.”

Offline For one, I think it’s laughable how such a professional source would use the term White Album instead of The Beatles like the album is supposed to be called but also, I don’t think it will be nearly as good as Sgt. Pepper ‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band’s 50th anniversary box set, it’ll probably just be like this:

a couple of unreleased songs (unreleased meaning not part of The Beatles official canon)
a couple of unreleased versions of songs that were released on The Beatles

Every one of the Beatles has regularly referred to this as the White Album over the years. I’ll follow their lead.
It should be noted, @TheBeatlesFanatic231, that Giles Martin has already said his words are being taken out of context…

Offline They could just remaster and release the 4-cd 30th anniversary box that was rumoured to have been prepared and cleared for release until the last minute when Apple realised they had no pens left and all Beatles fans may have been in the same perilous situation.
Take 1 of ‘Yer Blues ‘ isn’t much help when you need to add milk to your shopping list.

Offline As Giles has somewhat confirmed a 50th anniversary edition of the White Album , what would be on the bonus disks?
Earlier takes of songs on the album, songs like “What’s The New Mary Jane ” that were not induced on the actual album, or maybe even “Carnival Of Light “.

I have a feeling Hey Jude /Revolution (and possibly Not Guilty ) would be part of this, like how SFF/Penny Lane was for the Sgt Pepper one.

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,

Offline It has to have the long version of Helter Skelter , the full Can You Take Me Back Where I Came From, the demos of course (including the ones that don’t usually make it to the bootlegs), and if at all possible a version of Revolution No. 9 with the backing rhythm in it or at least the full take of Revolution .

Offline Pretty much, if it has Carnival Of Light , I’d buy it. 
It will also need some studio chatter, more than Sgt Pepper .
Also, some isolated tracks (such as isolated saxes to Savoy Truffle ) would be really nice

Offline Since there will be a 5.1 surround sound mix there’s no need to include isolated tracks as that gives us 6 channels to work with and most songs off the album were recorded on 8 track machines which means that only 2 channels need to combine 2 tracks whereas the rest of the channels get to have 1 track for themselves and some songs didn’t even fill up all 8 tracks. In the case of Savoy Truffle they would probably do something like this:

Offline Why would ‘CoL’ be on a ‘White Album ‘ box set, it was recorded a year earlier during sessions for ‘Pepper’?
We should get all Esher/Kinfauns demos that exist, three discs of outtakes to cover all sides of the LP plus the surrounds sessions; ‘Lady Madonna ‘, Hey Bulldog ‘, ‘ATU’, ‘Hey Jude ‘ etc, and a book extensively detailing the sessions/recordings.
And to remember the 30th anniversary, Apple to cancel it, instead offering us a luxury stationary set. Who doesn’t want a white pencil sharpener with ‘The Beatles’ embossed on the side?

Offline In an interview earlier this year, talking about the Pepper deluxe, he mentioned the “White” was next, @Shamrock Womlbs. This started speculation that he was working on a “White” deluxe.
A few days later he put out a tweet that’s rather a weak denial:
Just to confirm. . . I said the ‘White Album ‘ is the next Beatles album. I promise that I’m not working on it. Enjoy Sgt Pepper first! X
Just because he wasn’t working on it then, doesn’t mean he won’t be. If he started work in next January, he’d still have eight/nine months before he had to present his final proposal. The sign-off is also interesting as he says, “Enjoy Sgt Pepper first!” which could indicate he knows something is on its heels, and the logical something would be the “White”.

Offline All of the demos in their entirety would be nice and Hey Jude demos/outtakes as well. I would be interested to know if there is any Revolution No 9 material in the vaults.
No chance of Carnival Of Light making it’s way on this release. If it was going to be on a deluxe edition it would have been Pepper.
And in the end the lunch you take is equal to the lunch you bake.

Offline This would be a weird release, assuming they would have 2018 remix or something like that, because it would be stepping on The Beatles toes by this time. I would still love to hear Giles’ version of the remix for sure, but The Beatles did start caring about the stereo mixes around this time. In other news… there would be a lot of cool things for bonus materiel in this set. We already have the remixes of Hey Jude and Revolution so they would just be copy and paste from 2015. Having numbered copies like they did in 1968 would be cool too!!

well… according to Geoff Emerick, bits of ‘Carnival Of Light ‘ were in fact used during ‘Revolution #9’… if his memories are intact, the ‘White Album ‘ is the only place where the Carnival does indeed see the Light of Day… sonically it would probably work much better amongst the ‘White Album ‘ material instead of Pepper’s gloss… a better spot, in my opinion, would be to include it alongside the ‘Arial Instrumental Tour’ for the ‘Magical Mystery Tour ‘ edition… why? so we can hear it sooner of course…:-)

Offline Since Paul has confirmed there’s a 50th anniversary on the way, and he mentions it including demos, which would indicate the inclusion of some – or all – of the May Esher demos, I thought some might find this recent (29 May) Rolling Stone survey of the known 27 songs demoed interesting (all include YT links).
I say the “known 27 songs” because we could be surprised. Dylan’s Basement Tapes had been largely leaked, over 100 tracks circulating on bootleg by the time it got an official Bootleg Series release… which added nearly another 40 tracks that had never been heard.
I’m just suggesting there’s lots of scope in this period for things we have no idea about, or know little of…
And they could well be more exciting than something like the fabled 27-minute Helter Skelter … which can likely never do anything but disappoint if not edited, as would Carnival Of Light if we ever got to a second or third listen.
What are some of the studio outtakes, proper recordings or jams, that people would like to see explored?
Myself, I’d like a good exploration of the I Will session, which included lots of ad-libs, full version of Can You Take Me Back? among them. I’d also like some of the straight outtake jams like Brian Epstein Blues.
I have a feeling that the archive for the White could contain much more than we know, and that things like Revolution [take 20] (which must surely be expected if they are not to get howls of derision) help explain something like Revolution 9 .
I am more excited about what this could be expanded than I was Pepper, and Pepper pole-vaulted my expectations at around a Sky Lab height.
I have further thoughts. Some not as generous. I know I do!

Offline I’d love to hear some progression of songs (like a take 1, take 5, take 10 sort of thing), especially for more complicated songs like Savoy Truffle , Back In The USSR , and Piggies .
Obviously the 27 minute Helter Skelter would be top of the list too.
Some of the tape loops from Revolution 9 , isolated, would be really cool too. Dunno how that would work though.
More studio chatter than the Sgt Pepper discs would be better.
I’m sure I’ll think of more stuff in the near future. I’m sure Apple Corps still hasn’t thought of everything that will go on it yet…
