Sounds good to our modern sensibilities, but is there room for 16 tracks on a piece of vinyl (from 1964)? Would the DJs play the designated “A side” and “B side” of the single on the radio if it were part of an album? Or are you saying that the single would be a single and part of the album? Well, Bob Dylan was releasing 50-minute albums at around the same time, so I think an 8-song, 20 minute album side from the Beatles would be possible. And having the single taken from the album was done most of the time in the U.S. And the singles would still have their A-side promoted by the djs. (Also by the albums themselves, which would occasionally have “Contains the hit single…!” stamped on the cover.) But now I’m going to drive myself crazy thinking of 16-song albums from 1966 or earlier. (There HAS to be one!)
LPs can hold up to fifty-two minutes of music, or up to twenty-six minutes per side. Ultimately, it all depends on how long the songs are.

New advances in mastering must have taken place in the ’70s, since Todd Rundgren’s Initiation album is something like 68 minutes – the extended suite on side two is slightly longer than most Beatle albums! But I think it had volume/clarity issues.

There were certainly space and quality issues as some of Paul’s 80’s albums were shortened on LP due to space issues as was Queen’s ‘Innuendo’. ‘Give My Regards To Broad Street ‘ runs for just over 61:10 but the cover notes on the LP read
This record is longer than usual but due to the available playing time on a vinyl disc some editing of the sound track has been necessary to retain full volume and dynamic range. Even longer versions exist on cassette and compact disc.
On the flip side however if you bought the ‘All The Best’ LP or cassette you got 3 more tracks as the cd wasn’t long enough (for some reason it was 2 LP’s and only 1 cd).

Offline All of these songs belong as A-side singles, with the next track bring their B-side. This whole album is just full of them, which makes it so unique.

Offline Happiness Is A Warm Gun is my choice. It’s very unique and a is a good representation of the album it comes from. The song that I would like to have seen as an A-side the least is probably Birthday . That song is rubbish (in my opinion)

Offline I think While My Guitar Gently Weeps with Dear Prudence as the b-side would be great.
Why is tempo an issue for singles? Hey Jude was their biggest ever single and that’s pretty slow.
If I had to choose two singles from the double LP it would be Revolution 9 and Wild Honey Pie ..
Joking obviously, I think Hey Jude / Revolution should have been on the album and WMG/Dear Prudence the second single.
I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Offline I have to agree with what The Beatles actually did for a The Beatles single, although unfortunately they chose not to release in the US or UK.

It fits pretty well. For an A side, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da is a great sing-along number that shows us what The Beatles is really about. On the other hand, While My Guitar Gently Weeps fits perfectly as a B-side because it’s such a great classic rock ballad with 2 excellent guitar solos by at the time Cream guitarist Eric Clapton.

Offline This may be cheating but I think they should’ve cut out CYTMB, Revolution 9 , and Good Night and replaced it with Hey Jude as well as replace Revolution 1 with Revolution , which would make those 2 songs the album singles. If I can’t do that though, then I guess we could have Birthday as the A side and for the B side, just have Paul talking about how much he loves his fans while fiddling around on his acoustic guitar, I bet the girls would kill for something like this back in 1968.
