so many good songs

-Bob Dylan, Subterranean Homesick Blues

Do people look at lists, work out who sang what and then assumption they like John over Paul or vice-verse? Surely its worse to work out who sang what first and rank it that way.

Mother Nature’s Son

This list is my favorite to my least favorite and judged as a whole track verse the others.  I ranked them as if I could only have one to listen to forever and then pick the next one and so on and so forth.  Not that I don’t like the low ones I just would put the higher tracks on repeat more often.

That’s a shame, because Julia is actually a lovely little song. I’m always humming that or I Will .

30:Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (1/10)

Might be the very worst Beatles song. I really hate this song with a passion.

29:Wild Honey Pie (2/10)

It’s an experimental piece of music. I don’t see it as a real song tho.

28:Revolution 9 (2/10)

It’s not a song. It’s some kind of art. I’m not sure if i find it kinda scary or if i just don’t like it. Maybe both?

27:Good Night (3/10)

Forgottable and boring. End of story

26:Birthday (3/10)

I don’t like this song. One of the low points of the album.

25:Honey Pie (4/10)

Boring and forgottable. Can’t really remember what it sounds like until i hear it.

24:Savoy Truffle (5/10)

Interesting song. Just not my taste.

23:The Continuning Story Of Bungalow Bill (5/10)

A pretty fun song. Not a favourite of mine.

22:Why Don’t We Do It In The Road? (5/10)

Kinda experimental, isn’t it? It’s okay i guess. I don’t skip it.

21:Glass Onion (6/10)

Pretty good song.

20:Revolution 1 (6/10)

I love the song just called “Revolution “. Compared to Revolution this isn’t great. But it still sound a lot like Revolution so i like it.

19:Yer Blues (6/10)

Good song. Sounds like “I Found Out ” and “Well Well Well” from Plastic Ono Band By John Lennon . I love that album.

18:Cry Baby Cry (6/10)

Haven’t listened to this one a lot. But i still like it. I just don’t “love it”

17:Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey (6/10)

Fun song. I like it.

16:Don’t Pass Me By (6/10)

Why is this always at the bottom? I love Ringo’s voice. And therefor, i like this song.

15:Martha My Dear (6/10)

Still not loving it. But i’m liking it. If that makes sense.

14:Blackbird (6/10)

A bit dull perhaps? Still an amazing lullaby. Way better than Good Night that Lennon wrote as a lullaby for his son.

13:Sexy Sadie (7/10)

Still not loving tho but it’s getting kinda close to love now. I like this song a lot.

12:I Will (7/10)

Great song. Really.

11:Back In the U.S.S.R (7/10)

Who doesn’t like this one? I mean it’s not my favourite from the album but i understands why pretty much every Beatles fan like this song.

10:Mother ‘s Natures Son (7/10)

Recently started listening to this one. I’m liking it a lot for the moment.

9:Dear Prudence (7/10)

I might love this song. But i want it back to back with Back In the U.S.S.R

8:Julia (7/10)

Saddest song on the album. Sounds like Look At Me from Plastic Ono band. Guess Lennon took inspiration from White Album when he made that album.

7:Piggies (8/10)

I kinda love this song. I have no idea why.

6:Rocky Raccoon (9/10)

Amazing song. I love it. Amazing lyrics and a great flow. It’s just…incredible.

5:Helter Skelter (10/10)

Beatles most heavy song. And IMO the first real Heavy Metal song. This is hard. I love it.

4:While My Guitar Gently Weeps (10/10)

Used to love it more before (it used to be 2 or 1) I still love it. I have just heard it a billion times :/

3:Long, Long, Long (10/10)

Haunting and extremely good song. Best Harrison song on the album.I have no word for this song. It’s just too good.

2:Happiness Is A Warm Gun (10/10)

Kinda experimental. Three songs in one. Make it seem like a short Bohemian Rhapsody (No i’m not comparing it to Boh Rhap.)

1:I’m So Tired (10/10)

Everything except the last 4 seconds is perfect with this song. I just don’t like french or what ever he speaks by the end of it. 100% otherwise!

1-Bad Song

2-I Don’t Like This Song

3-It’s alright i guess?

4-An okay song

5-Good Song

6-Great song

7-Incredible song. Really like this

8-I love this

9-Amazing song. Probably one of my favs.

10-Masterpiece. One of my favourite songs. Would probably not change a thing about the song.

Challenge accepted! Hereby I rank the songs on the White Album from least favourite to favourite.

Good Night This song is a lullaby, and a great indeed, because it always puts me to sleep. One of the few Beatles songs I find rather boring. Ringos vocals don’t fit the track, and the orchestration is somehow dull.

Julia – Congratulations, Lennon. Another bland closing track on this album. Not awful, but also somehow boring.

Wild Honey Pie – I don’t mind Wild Honey Pie , it’s actually rather enjoyable, but indeed not really necessary.

Yer Blues – I like blues, but honestly I’m not a fan of the Beatles attempt at the genre. It’s not bad, but I rarely listen to it.

Sexy Sadie I used to like Sexy Sadie much better a year or so ago. Now it’s too repetitive for me. Definitley not “the greatest of them all”.

The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill – Has some cool lyrics, but the music is too repetitive. I don’t think it’s bad, it just doesn’t grip me.

Cry Baby, Cry – The things I said about Sexy Sadie can be repeated here. Perhaps I like the small snippet at the end even better than the main song.

Martha My Dear – Decent song, nothing more and nothing less. Nice vocals, but which Paul song doesn’t have them?

Revolution 1 – I think the single version fits the track way better, this one seems a little odd. The light version of a great track.

Revolution 9 – Difficult to compare to the others, many poeple hate it, and of course it is the wrong place to look for a melodic structure. But I find it rather fascinating as a weird, creepy, even frightening listening experience in which I can always discovernew details.

Why Don’t we do it in the road? – Once again superb McCartney vocals, this one could even rank (much) higher if it was a full song. Sadly it fells more like a snippet, but a good one still.

Mother Nature’s Song – I often annoy my friends by singing this, I myself like it of course. Sometimes I confuse it with I will, which I like better when I compare them directly.

Long, Long, Long – Strange to say I rarely listen to this one. Difficult to rank, I guess it will grow on me in the future.

Back In The USSR – Used to be one of my favourite Beatles tracks, but now that I’m more familiar with their music it doesn’t sound very unique anymore. Still a solid rock song though.

Honey Pie – Please don’t hit me, I have a weakness for Pauls “silly, funny, catchy” type of songs.

Glass Onion – The references to previous songs and lyrics always put a smile on my face. Apart from that it isn’t their greatest song, but a very decent piece of rock.

I will – Lovely Little song by Paul. Not a masterpiece, but quite enjoyable.

Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da – I’m probably going to catch hell for this, but I adore Ob-La-Di. It’s such a catchy and funny song, how can’t you sing along? And of course the “mistakes” in the lyrics are funny.

Everybody got something to hide, except for me and my Monkey – This one has grown on me, cool rock song. Writing the title is a pain though.

Piggies – A small, satirical George song that sounds both fresh and refreshing.

Rocky Raccoon – An underrated song and actually the favourite Beastles song of a friend of mine. Nice lyrics, nice flow, nice western vibe.

I’m So Tired – One of the tracks that has grown on me. Intense vocals, great interplay between quiet ballad and raw rock.

Don’t Pass Me By – Another underrated track. I like the vocals and the violin/percussion arrangement. Solid effort by good ol’ Ringo.

Dear Prudence – I used to skip it, shame on me! But now I like it better everytime I hear it. I adore how it builds up more and more and turns quiet again at the end. Great melody too.

Savoy Truffle – THE most underrated Beatles gem, George just had an incredible talent for pulling off slow hard rock. The guitars and the wind section work perfectly together, and the lyrics sound like a dessert buffet and are about Eric Clapton’s dental hygiene. How cool is that?

Birthday – The next underrated track. The vocals, the guitars, the drums (!), the variations… This song freaking rocks!

Happiness Is A Warm Gun – Bittersweet, melancholic, dynamic. The individual segments work perfectly together and when the build-up reaches it’s peak and the song bursts into the final piece with the title, it sends shivers down my spine (by the way, I could say the exact same thing about Pauls Band On The Run ).

Blackbird – I used to love it, then it dropped, now I love it again. Such a minimalistic but peaceful masterpiece, the acoustic guitar is incredible. And when the birds singing begins, oh my God

While My Guitar Gently Weeps – Enough has been written about Georges masterpiece (or one of them). What a beautiful, haunting song!

Helter Skelter – Best song on the album, hands down! I must have listened to it a thousand times and it never get’s boring. Chaotic and harmonic at the same time, exciting, feels like an aggressive trip on a roller coaster. Helter Skelter was definitely worth the blisters.

Queen says no to pot-smoking FBI members.

30. Rocky Raccoon – I don’t mind this song but I can take it or leave it so that’s why it is listed at the bottom for me.

29. Piggies – Same as above but this song is shorter.

28. Don’t Pass Me By – This song has some of the worst lyrics on a Beatles recording. I wish it was a little bit shorter.

27. Why Don’t We Do It In The Road? – This song is alright, there isn’t much to it but at least it is short.

26. Sexy Sadie – I don’t think much of this song at all but it isn’t the worst in my opinion.

25. Cry Baby Cry – I do like the flow of this song and the lyrics but I have to be in the mood for it.

24. Revolution 1 – It might be surprising to see this song so low but I prefer the single version and I only listen to this version when I listen to album in it’s entirety.

23. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da – I have to be in the mood for this song but it is bouncy and fun.

22. Martha My Dear – Paul can write a good melody but this song doesn’t really go anywhere.

21. Mother Nature’s Son – Same as above but I think this song is a little better.

20. I Will – So many Paul songs in a row but I do like this song but I have to be in the mood for it. I have said that a lot but I feel like a lot of these songs work in the context of the album.

19. Julia – I like the poetic lyrics and the melody of this song but it doesn’t rank among my favourites.

18. Wild Honey Pie – Some people might be surprised to see this one so high but I like listening to it as it is so weird and silly.

17. Revolution 9 – Another one that might surprise some people but I like some noise music and I like this as a sound collage and I find it very interesting as there’s so much going on. It’s not for everyday listening but it is good in moderation.

16. Good Night – I for one like this song. I think it was a nice touch having Ringo sing it but maybe it should have been more spoken word then singing but it is still a nice song.

15. The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill – I think this song is fun, it is ridiculous but it is fun.

14. Honey Pie – I like the production of this song and it is very well written and performed.

13. Helter Skelter – This song basically created Heavy Metal and I like it when Paul screams.

12. Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except For Me And My Monkey – Another rock song this time from John. I like it when John screams as well and I also like the lyrics on this one.

11. Birthday – This song is fun little rock n roll song.

10. I’m So Tired – I can related to this song and I like the blues/rock feel to this song.

9. Long Long Long – One of the more mellow songs on the record but one of my favourites.

8. Blackbird – I have always liked this song and this is one Paul’s most beautiful melodies as well.

7. Dear Prudence – Another beautiful song. I love the way this song builds and build. It’s great.

6. Yer Blues – I love this blues/rock song. This had to be an influence on Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.

5. Savoy Truffle – I have a real soft spot for this song. I love the lyrics and the guitar solo to this song.

4. Glass Onion – This song is a throwback to the psychedelic days of the year prior. I love the lyrics and I love that bass as well.

3. Back In The USSR – Another great album opener from Paul. I love The Beach Boys feel to this song as well.

2. While My Guitar Gently Weeps – One of George’s all time greatest songs and great guitar work from Eric Clapton. As much as I love the Acoustic version I still love the album version as well.

1. Happiness Is A Warm Gun – This had to be my number one. I love that it is three songs in one and is a mini rock opera. I love the lyrics and the way the song keeps changing.

This was hard as there is so many songs and I was surprised that I had three George songs in my top ten but as I said earlier in the post that some of these songs I like in the context of the album but some songs I don’t like as much as individual songs.

It was hard but I like a challenge.

And in the end the lunch you take is equal to the lunch you bake.

This is going to be a very long list so it’ll be in spoilers, also i have Hey Jude and Revolution as honorable mentions but since they’re not on The Beatles, i can’t count them.

30. Good Night

Although it’s not a bad song, it’s my least favorite Beatles song, mainly due to the fact that it’s a boring orchestrated pop song with a cheesy orchestral accompaniment, something that i’d expect to hear in a Disney movie.

Personnel:

Ringo Starr : Lead vocals

George Martin: Celesta

Mike Sammes singers: Backing vocals

Uncredited orchestra

29. Wild Honey Pie

A very short composition done entirely by Paul, the closest thing you’ll get to an instrumental on The White Album and a terrible one at that.

Personnel:

Paul McCartney : Lead vocals, Acoustic guitar, Drums

28. Julia

This song is a real snooze, it’s such a bore.

Personnel:

John Lennon : Lead vocals, Acoustic guitar

27. Piggies

The harpsichord on this track is pretty cool, wish i could say that for the rest of the song, which is mediocre at best.

Personnel:

George Harrison : Lead and backing vocals, Acoustic guitar

John Lennon : Tape loops

Paul McCartney : Bass

Ringo Starr : Drums, tambourine

Chris Thomas: Harpsichord

Henry Datyner: Violin

Eric Bowie: Violin

Norman Lederman: Violin

Ronald Thomas: Violin

John Underwood: Viola

Keith Cummings: Viola

Eldon Fox: Cello

Reginald Kilbey: Cello

26. Don’t Pass Me By

This song has the distinction of being one of only 2 Beatles songs written entirely by Ringo but unlike Octopus’s Garden , this one isn’t anything special and isn’t that good either.

Personnel:

Ringo Starr : Lead vocals, Drums, Piano, Sleigh bells

Paul McCartney : Bass, Piano

Jack Fallon: Violin

25. Mother Nature’s Son

This is a pretty good song although there are far better on this album.

Personnel:

Paul McCartney : Lead vocals, Acoustic guitar, Drums, Timpani

Unknown brass section

24. Long, Long, Long

This is one of the more psychedelic songs on the album.

Personnel:

George Harrison : Lead vocals, Acoustic guitar

Paul McCartney : Fender bass, Hammond organ, Backing vocals

Ringo Starr : Drums

Chris Thomas: Piano

23. Sexy Sadie

I think this song is overrated but that doesn’t mean that i don’t like it, it’s a decent song with lyrics that imply prostitution, can’t say that about many other songs.

Personnel:

John Lennon : Lead and backing vocals, Acoustic guitar

Paul McCartney : Bass, Piano, Backing vocals

George Harrison : Gibson lead guitar

Ringo Starr : Drums, tambourine

22. Honey Pie

This is a good song with a very jazz influenced sound.

Personnel:

Paul McCartney : Lead vocals, Piano

John Lennon : Lead guitar

George Harrison : Fender 6 string bass

Ringo Starr : Drums

Dennis Walton : Saxophone

Ronald Chamberlain: Saxophone

Jim Chester: Saxophone

Rex Morris: Saxophone

Harry Klein: Saxophone

Raymond Newman: Clarinet

David Smith: Clarinet

21. I Will

This is a lovely song and the trick to playing it on guitar is to tune your guitar down to D like Paul did on Yesterday .

Personnel:

Paul McCartney : Lead and backing vocals, Acoustic guitar

John Lennon : Cowbell

Ringo Starr : Drums, tambourine, maracas

20. Revolution 9

Some hate this song, i like it, it’s one of those songs where you play it to scare off trick or treaters on Halloween.

Personnel:

John Lennon : Spoken dialogue, Tape loops

George Harrison : Spoken dialogue, Reversed electric guitar

Yoko Ono: Spoken dialogue, Tape loops

George Martin: Spoken intro

Allistar Taylor: Spoken intro

Backing track of Revolution 1

19. Rocky Raccoon

A nice little track about the wild west.

Personnel:

Paul McCartney : Lead vocals, Acoustic guitar, Bass

John Lennon : Fender 6 string bass, Harmonica, Backing vocals

George Harrison : Backing vocals

Ringo Starr : Drums

George Martin: Piano

18. Revolution 1

Inferior to the single version but still a good song.

Personnel:

John Lennon : Lead vocals, Acoustic rhythm guitar, Lead guitar

Paul McCartney : Bass, Piano, Organ, Backing vocals

George Harrison : Electric guitar, Backing vocals

Ringo Starr : Drums, Washboard

George Martin: “Alright, take 2”

Francie Schwartz: Backing vocals

Derek Watkins: Trumpet

Freddy Clayton: Trumpet

Don Lang: Trombone

Rex Morris: Trombone

J. Power: Trombone

Bill Povey: Trombone

17. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da

Although it made Geoff Emmerick quit, i still love this song, especially when Paul doubles the bassline on his acoustic guitar.

Personnel:

Paul McCartney : Lead vocals, Bass, Acoustic guitar, Piano fills

John Lennon : Piano, Backing vocals

George Harrison : Acoustic guitar, Backing vocals

Ringo Starr : Drums, maracas, bongos

Ronnie Scott: Saxophone

Leon Calvert: Trumpet

Stanley Reynolds: Trumpet

Ronnie Hughes: Trumpet

Leon Calvert: Flugelhorn

Tony Tunstall: French horn

Ted Barker: Trombone

Alf Reece: Tuba

15. The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill

A nice upbeat number about a hunter and what did he kill, also known for being the last appearance of the mellotron on a Beatles song.

Personnel:

John Lennon : Lead and backing vocals, Acoustic guitar, Hammond organ, whistling, handclaps

Paul McCartney : Bass, Backing vocals, whistling, handclaps

George Harrison : Acoustic guitar, Backing vocals, whistling, handclaps

Ringo Starr : Drums, tambourine, Backing vocals, handclaps

Yoko Ono: Shared lead vocals with John during final verse

Chris Thomas: Mellotron, Backing vocals, handclaps

Maureen Starkey: Backing vocals, handclaps

Uncredited classical guitar solo at beginning of song

14. I’m So Tired

A solid effort by John about how he’s so tired, very underrated.

Personnel:

John Lennon : Lead vocals, Rhythm guitar

Paul McCartney : Bass, Backing vocals, Hammond organ, Piano

George Harrison : Lead guitar

Ringo Starr : Drums

13. Blackbird

A nice acoustic number by Paul that really shows off his acoustic guitar skills.

Personnel:

Paul McCartney : Lead vocals, Acoustic guitar, Tapping foot

If you missed out on Magical Mystery Tour , this song’s got you covered with references to Strawberry Fields Forever , I Am The Walrus , Fool On The Hill, as well as Fixing A Hole from Sgt. Pepper and Lady Madonna .

Personnel:

John Lennon : Lead vocals, Acoustic guitar

Paul McCartney : Fender bass, Piano, Recorder

It should be noted, @Dark Overlord, that Can You Take Me Back is not just Paul. It’s from the same session as I Will  and features a similar line-up, with John doing percussion and maracas (and an audible vocal line in the fuller version), and Ringo on bongos:

Very difficult album to rank, but this is my list today. Notice no Paul songs in the top 10:

1. Happiness Is A Warm Gun – A mini masterpiece of a song and lyrically very mysterious.

2. Dear Prudence – Prettiest song on the album. Just brilliantly constructed.

3. While My Guitar Gently Weeps – George’s best Beatles song in my book, even better than Something .

4. Glass Onion – Awesome lyrics from John. Just a great little rocker.

5. Everybody’s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey – Very underrated Beatles rocker. That cowbell is sweet!

6. I’m So Tired – Again very underrated. I love John’s muffled vocals in this track. The lyrics are also great.

7. Sexy Sadie – Underrated as well. I love the Maharishi connotations in the lyrics.

8. Cry Baby Cry – Quite a mysterious song from John. Again I love his vocals.

9. Revolution 1 – Yes it’s not as good as Revolution , but it’s still amazing.

10. Julia – I don’t understand why people disregard this song. It’s one of John’s most introspective and touching songs. Just listen to Sean Lennon’s rendition of it in 2001…

11. Helter Skelter – The first metal song ever? Quite possibly. Undeniably great song.

12. Back in the U.S.S.R – Not one of the best openers to a Beatles album, but it’s still pretty damn good.

13. Yer Blues – Love John’s lyrics as usual. I do partially wish the solo was better though. Eric Clapton did it more justice…

14. Mother Nature’s Son – Better than Blackbird imo. It’s just got more substance and depth. Love how it transports the listener to India.

15. I Will – Just a nice little love song from Paul. Not much else to say…

16. Blackbird – Overplayed but it’s still a good song. I don’t think it’s one of Paul’s best though.

17. Martha My Dear – Cool song and I especially love the brass instrumentation.

18. The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill – A great satirical song from John. I also don’t mind Yoko on the track.

19. Savoy Truffle – Cool rocker from George. The chocolate lyrics Let It Down slightly but I still like the context of them.

20. Birthday – Very silly song but it still rocks. Again lyrics Let It Down slightly.

21. Long, Long, Long – Strange song that’s continued to grow on me. Maybe it’ll be ranked higher one day.

22. Revolution 9 – Difficult to rank because it’s not a traditional song. I still really love it though and enjoy hearing it occasionally. It’s only low on this list due to its length.

23. Good Night – Don’t really get the hate for this song. It’s supposed to be a cheesy lullaby and it ends the album well. I also like the fact that the lyrics are from John’s nursery rhymes to Julian.

24. Ob-La Di, Ob-La-Da – I like the song but it can be annoying at times. If i’m in the right mood then i’ll enjoy it.

25. Piggies – Fun song from George and I think the lyrics are pretty clever. It’s not your average Beatles song. A bit too wacky and silly to go any higher.

26. Wild Honey Pie – It’s only a snippet but I actually don’t mind it. At least it’s something different…

27. Rocky Racoon – This song used to really annoy me but I like it more now. Again, I have to be in the right mood to listen to it.

28. Why Don’t We Do It in the Road? – It’s a pretty cool song, but Paul’s vocals do annoy me a bit. John would have been better.

29. Honey Pie – I like the idea of the song and I think it’s well executed. It’s still probably the weakest of Paul’s granny tunes though.

30. Don’t Pass Me By – Sorry Ringo but I don’t like this song. It’s very simplistic and the instrumentation is pretty annoying. It’s in my top 5 worst Beatles tracks.

Wow, Paul’s first song clocks in at the 11 spot. 90% John in the top ten.

I think the White Album probably has John’s best Beatles work. a-hard-days-night-john-1

I find Paul’s contribution to be pretty mixed. paul-mccartney

Sorry Paul, but I’m a John fan. a-hard-days-night-john-6
