a-hard-days-night-ringo-8Agreed, I think for me it’s probably from hearing it all the time growing up, so it just became one of those “famous songs that everyone knows” songs, whereas with a lot of other Beatles songs I became more familiar with them of my own volition, so there’s more of a connection there.

Beatlebug

I've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

Interestingly I used to feel that way about HCTS, but then I learned to play it, and then it became “mine”. (I’ve mentioned this before many-a-time but it’s an interesting comparison nonetheless.) Yesterday I also know how to play, of course, but it being a simpler song, I never had to work as hard at it, and so perhaps it didn’t have the same effect because I didn’t have to fall in love with its complexities.

It hadn’t occurred to me before that ‘Yesterday ‘ was the moment when the Beatles realised that not all four had to be on the record and it would end up having a significant impact on the songs they recorded in the studio and how. Before this moment all songs featured all four Beatles and it wasn’t until ‘Revolver ‘ where it became more frequent.

Weirdly, it was ‘We Can Work It Out ‘ that brought that to mind.

Though, you could argue that George Martin had the same opinion right at the beginning of their EMI recording career when he drafted in Andy White to play on Love Me Do and P.S I Love You* instead of Ringo.

*I know Ringo played the tambourine and maracas during the sessions etc…

Martin was following standard practice back in the day when producers didn’t give a toss who was out playing live in the band, what mattered was who was recording in the studio was good. Recording time cost money and no studio wanted to spend more than was minimally required. John, Paul and George were only in the door so were never going to question it, Ringo shook the tambourine whilst being gutted.

I’m sure it was hard on him but there’s little doubt that it is the better recording because the addition of the tambourine gives it a kick that the earlier version lacks.

Arranging and teaching this for one of my students, and even for a melody I know so well, Paul’s melodic selection over the harmony and chordal structure is so natural and beautiful. I don’t think he realized at the time how musically advanced it actually is. George Martin heard it and though “let’s pair some of my classical stylings with that and you’ve got a masterpiece”

For a few years now I’ve been wondering why Paul has stopped performing Yesterday . The last time was at a Freshen Up Tour stop on October 31st, 2018 at the Tokyo Dome. Here is the video:

The performance does not seem any different to me than the ones earlier on the tour. However the audience reaction is somewhat subdued. At the end of the song when Paul exchanges guitars with the equipment manager, they appear to exchange some words which results in the guy trying to milk the crowd for more applause. I don’t recall ever seeing this in any other Paul video. I wish I knew the translation of what Paul says to the crowd in Japanese. All I know is, the next night Paul substituted I Saw Her Standing There and Yesterday has not been heard from since.

* For comparison when I saw Paul & Linda in 1990, Yesterday evoked a 5 minute standing ovation that shook the stadium!!beatlemaniacs_02_gif

I don’t know, but I’ve seen some comments suggesting that it’s not appropriate for Paul’s voice now?

I think that is part of it as well, although there isn’t that much difference between Yesterday and Here Today .
