Look at how good the second track songs in Beatles albums are. This would be high up there for me, but it’s really hard to rank them all. Dear Prudence , Something , The Night Before , etc…and of course Dig A Pony .
1.The Beatles 2.Sgt. Pepper 3.Abbey Road 4.Magical Mystery Tour 5.Rubber Soul 6.Revolver 7.Help! 8.Let It Be
9.A Hard Day’s Night 10.Please Please Me 11.Beatles For Sale 12.With The Beatles 13.Yellow Submarine

Have just spotted on the back of the Sgt Peppers vinyl cover, that the title of this song with the lyrics is “A Little Help From My Friends”
But on official track listings and on the vinyl itself it’s obviously “With A Little Help From My Friends”. Does anybody know why this is different? Is it simply a typo or was it changed at some point?

A mixture of the outtakes on the 50th ‘Pepper’ and the multitracks that were bootlegged years ago have slowly given me a liking for this song. There is an odd warmth that comes from the track, possibly due to the backing vocals interacting so well with Ringo’s lead. I do prefer the multitrack remix where the intro is clean, missing the audience screams and “Billy Shears” being yelled.

Do jp&g’s backings sound a little weird to anyone else, like lower in pitch and timbre than normal?
I’m guessing the backing vocals were recorded with the tape running a tiny bit slow, maybe so the three could better match Ringo’s previously recorded lead vocal in his lower range…
GEORGE: In fact, The Detroit Sound. JOHN: In fact, yes. GEORGE: In fact, yeah. Tamla-Motown artists are our favorites. The Miracles. JOHN: We like Marvin Gaye. GEORGE: The Impressions PAUL & GEORGE: Mary Wells. GEORGE: The Exciters. RINGO: Chuck Jackson. JOHN: To name but eighty.

Are you talking about the normative recording, or one of the many “remixes” which I’m still confused about?

No weird mixes no, just the regular familiar one. The backing vocals (particularly during the “neeeeeed anybody” bits) always sound slightly sluggish, flattened, almost like John’s slowed “Strawberry Fields Vocal”. Geoff Emerick has said how often they adjusted the tape speed up or down; I suspect they did so here.

For a long time I didn’t really take this song seriously, but it really is quite the songwriting achievement. Its really simple, but just works on every level. The call and responses are my favorite part, and the lyric “I need somebody to love” feels really poignant. Not a fancy tune at all, and thats kind of why it works. Its really difficult to write songs without all of the excess trimmed away, but thats how its able to connect in a really sincere way. The production is good too, the drums sound huge and really carry the groove to allow Paul to throw some fancier flourishes into his baseline. The harmonies on “would you believe?” Are some of my favorite in the whole a catalog.
It sits in a weird spot in the echelon of Beatles songs too. It is very popular, but not revered to the extent that many of their classic hits and deep tracks are. As a Lennon McCartney I like it more than pretty much all of the individual contributions on Pepper aside from Fixing A Hole and Mr Kite.
