Thanks @sigh butterflyI changed my mind! I just listened to it again with my undivided attention, and I like it a lot! That first Clapton solo is impeccable. The chord changes throughout are more varied and subtler in structure than my memory of them. Lyrics very cool (and acutely ironic for reasons I won’t dwell on here), George’s singing is top par. The moaning at the end is inspired.

I always thought it was overrated too until I heard the Anthology version and that captured my heart and soul. As a guitarist and musician, I do of course appreciate what they did with the final version, and Clapton’s solo is really inspired (I don’t typically like his work all that much, but man, he was in the zone that day), but in my heart, my allegiance firmly belongs to the acoustic arrangement and George’s gentler ballad delivery.

So the Anthology is the gentler acoustic version? I’ll have to check that out, thanks.

I generally like Eric Clapton’s playing and his WMGGW solo is impressive, but George was a top-class guitarist too, and he was sometimes quite underrated. All things considered, I would have preferred George to have played the solo part on this great song rather than bringing in Eric.

The acoustic take 1 is beautiful (ignore the ‘Anthology’ version as it’s got an utterly pointless looped fade out), the released heavier version is incredible. The ‘Love’ reimagining is garbage as the orchestral score adds nothing but junk over the top, Martin’s work failing to match George’s performance. Disliked it when it first came out never understanding the acclaim it got, still cannot stand it. It’s far inferior to what GM did for ‘Grow Old With Me ‘ and that was bad enough.

I tried finding it but when I type “beatles While My Guitar Gently Weeps acoustic take 1″ into YT, it only gives me Take 2 (or other stuff not relevant)
