My favourite Ringo Beatle track. I would be interested to read why the majority of folk always put this as the worst song on ‘Rubber Soul ‘ or low down in their rankings.

Well, @meanmistermustard, Ringo does a great job singing it, but on an album where you have masterpieces like Michelle , Drive My Car , Nowhere Man , Norwegian Wood , Girl, etc., What goes On sounds too flat, without beautiful modulations in the melody, no great solos, etc.; almost like a filler composed by Paul and John so that Ringo had “his” song. At least that’s the way I see it. Having said that, in the case of Lennon-McCartney even a filler is a good song –they were that good.

This is my fav track on Rubber Soul . It’s a lovely song with lovely Ringo vocals. It’s lovely. It’s humble. It doesn’t try to be more than what it is. That’s why I like it.

I personally love this song as well. It isn’t my favorite on the album, but it is a fun tune.

While washing the dishes this morning, I put my Rubber Soul cd into the old cd player on the kitchen counter top. That player has been bumped and dropped so many times over the years I’m surprised it still works. Anyway, I noticed that the songs were sounding a bit strange, but I didn’t stop doing the dishes to deal with it. THEN, What Goes On started playing. I could barely hear Ringo on the verses, and the only voice I could hear during the choruses was John. Very strange indeed.

The CD player was asking you if you meant to break its heart and watch it die. a-hard-days-night-george-10

You have to pump up the volume on this one to appreciate the super-tight rhythm section, the kick needs to be felt. The guitars are pretty restrained and don’t get in the way. The backup harmonies are pitch-perfect and underrated. It’s a master-class in less is more, and that bass is so fat and groovy.

I'm like Necko only I'm a bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin and also everyone. Or is everyone me? Now I'm a confused bassist ukulele guitar synthesizer kazoo penguin everyone who is definitely not @Joe.  This has been true for 2016 & 2017 Sig-Badge.png but I may have to get more specific in the future.

I like very much the guitars in this track, the way they sound and the way they’re played… So upbeat and crispy…

Ya, I’d have to put it right up there with Octopus’s Garden regarding one of my Fav Ringo tracks, but ya hardly a bad song, nor hardly a bad song on the UK version of Rubber Soul , period.

Makes me wonder if one of the speakers wasn’t working.

a-hard-days-night-ringo-8 Probably.

But, it gave me a fun moment. I started imagining that I was in the studio with them as they recorded the song. I imagined John walking over and stealing Ringo’s microphone and taunting “You can’t come out from behind that drum kit and get your mic, no canna ‘ya??” *wild shrieks of laughter from the boys* Geroge Martin calling out, “Come on, boys, quit larking about.”

I love making up rubbish about Beatles recording sessions. (T’is a side effect of 1. loving the Beatles and 2. listening to far too many Beatles outtakes.)

Think Carl Perkins, whom George, Paul & Ringo really liked. The 1st time I heard the word eclectric, it was in a story about The Beatles. They did rock n roll, Indian, psychedelic, country, classical, folk, heavy rock, experimental and an occasional “granny song”. Which genre is more Beatles?

Eclectric is a brilliant term. I wish I’d thought of that (typo intended or not).

I was singing along with this song while in the shower this morning. This line “I can see that I was blind” struck me as very clever.

Haha that had completely passed me by *checks for cars just in case*. I like the lines about the tides of time turning, thought that was a bit poetic.

Another example of the delights that Rock Band gave us is the isolated vocals on this track. Ringo sounds so sad and depressed yet they are having great fun recording it.

And the playing is so fab. Love George’s little guitar musings throughout.
