Well, here we are, my fellow Forumpudlians, the 2017 non-Canon Poll list for your consideration…

425 different items (actually 426 listed but one is a repeat) drawn from the Anthology series, the BBC releases, the Xmas flexis, Hollywood Bowl, Let It Be … NakedLove, some stray single-only tracks and a rare Italian-only release from 1968 (Apple DPR 108). Then, for good measure, we throw in the Polydor recordings, the Decca audition, and the Star Club recordings.

The majority of spoken word/interview material has been ignored. The Xmas flexis are in, along with a 1968 Kenny Everett interview I felt was in the same vein as the Xmas flexis, and Fly on the Wall – which I couldn’t decide how best to present and so throw it open to discussion.

I give recording date and location for each item, with broadcast details where relevant, along with the album on which it’s found (with the exception of Polydor, Decca, and the Star Club, as their releases are so numerous).

With recordings for broadcast, if I identify them as a ‘performance’ it indicates the presence of an audience.

You may find the list easier to copy to a document than go through here given its length.

First I offer you the A-Z list (‘A’ and ‘The’ at the beginning of titles is ignored, eg. ‘A Day In The Life ‘ is under D); the number in () after each title shows where it is in the chronological list…

EDIT (1 June 2017):

Voting is now open, and will remain open until 00:00 GMT 14 July.

The voting form can be found here.

My recommendation since, as others have noted, it’s a pretty long list, it might be better to work out your scores before filling in the form. I will be happy to help in any way possible.

Coming soon… the list will be posted on Monday replacing this holding post…

The list will go live for voting on 1 February for that month, the results will then be looked at to work out how best to unveil them, a lot more recordings than the Canon poll though, and so likely to released at a quicker pace… but I will not set a timetable until we have the results…

Hoping @Starr Shine? is available for help with the voting… john-lennon-salute_gif

I'm Necko.  I'm like Ringo except I wear necklaces.

I'm also ewe2 on weekends.

Most likely to post things that make you go hmm... 2015, 2016, 2017.

Well Necko, I like to vote in everything I can, because I’m not allowed to vote yet!

This means that I’ll be taking this poll about 10 times more seriously than I should take it…

I’m really hoping Sexy Sadie will do better this time around. Also, it makes me very sad to split up the Medley, so may I request we make it a single track for the voting?

As it is non-canon neither ‘Sexy Sadie ‘ or the Abbey Road medley should appear unless in a form which differs from the officially released original commercial versions such as take 6 of ‘Sexy Sadie ‘ which is on ‘Anthology 3 ‘. Not sure what is going to appear in this poll.

Poor reading on my part. “Non canon.”

Still, “Huge Melody” is one of my favorite outtakes, I hope it will appear. Over my time listening to bootlegs I made a list of some of my favorites if @Ron Nasty is interested in using it for help on the list.

I think it’s the officially released tracks which aren’t canon (i.e. not in the 2009 stereo box) plus a number of notable others like the 10:48 minute ‘Revolution 1 ‘ and ‘Child Of Nature ‘ but I cannot remember what was said previously (take 11 of ‘What You’re Doing ‘ should appear as well). I hope that there will be a few days to discuss the to-be-voted-on list instead of it just being thrown out as, for example, ‘Not Guilty ‘ is a fabulous track turned to utter crap courtesy of what we have on ‘Anthology 3 ‘. I hope the two are differentiated between.

Another issue is that ‘Free As A Bird ‘ and ‘Real Love ‘ were noticeably altered (and improved upon in my opinion) on ‘1+’. Is this taken into account or do we just vote for the general songs?

It will be more interesting to see how it’s being done. Ron may want to put on a bulletproof vest and helmet and get his arsenal ready for when I see it as this can be a very thorny issue, especially for someone like me who takes it all far too seriously. I apologise deeply in advance.

Does the famous fight between Paul and George during the Let It Be rehearsals fall into the category of “notable others?” I have it as Jan 6 – 30 – Two Of Us . It was featured in the movie as well.

I agree that there are takes of Not Guilty superior to the Anthology, and that there should be discussion over what appears on the list.

I trust Ron Nasty and Starr Shine as well to do a good job constructing the poll.

I would doubt it but don’t know.

The heated discussion (it wasn’t a fight) between Paul and George is DDSI #6.97, DDSI being the widely accepted numbering for the ‘Get Back ‘ material.

Does Bad Boy from “A Collection Of Oldies But Goldies” count as canon??  It was never released on a studio album, EP or single in the U.K.

Yip as ‘A Collection Of Oldies But Goldies’ was officially released in the UK in 1966. ‘Bad Boy ‘ is also on ‘Past Masters ‘ which is very much one of the albums in the canon.

I say we just KISS* and stick with everything on the 2009 remasters minus side b as well as the first and last tracks of side a of Yellow Submarine

If we did that we would be voting on the canon songs which we have already done.

Past Masters has to be canon, otherwise you are missing all those non-LP singles.

Past Masters ‘ was compiled by Apple in 1987 to gather all the singles, oddities and E.P. tracks that were not included on any of the U.K. studio albums and the U.S. ‘Magical Mystery Tour ‘ compilation. Both of these were then added to all the U.K albums, bar ‘A Collection Of Oldies But Goldies’ which was a 1966 EMI compilation, to create the canon.

It was a very neat idea as there are no duplicates or missing songs, only different mixes (which in itself is a massive swamp of oddities and uncertainties). The canon debate really begins with ‘Free As A Bird ‘ and ‘Real Love ‘ and where they stand in it – or out of it.

Do the songs from The Beatles TV show, like that short instrumental you hear during the title card before every episode, that weren’t released anywhere else count as non-canon.

I believe technically non-canon is whatever else was officially released on the UK albums outside of 2009 Stereo Box so both volumes of ‘Live At The BBC ‘, the ‘Anthology’ series, ‘Let It Be Naked, ‘Love’ and ‘Yellow Submarine Songtrack ‘ remixes, the official 1963 Beatles Bootleg (or whatever it’s called) and presumably the Christmas messages as they were officially released, albeit in a heavily limited form.
There is the argument made that anything else counts if officially released but personally I don’t buy into that as then you can have any and all [re]mixes (and there are so damn many – ‘Rock Band’, the 5.1 DVD mixes, U.S, German),  whatever sounds you hear in the official films, excerpts of outtakes and whatever else comes to mind. It can very quickly get incredibly messy.
