Is it just me,or does anyone else love the double meaning of the line ‘I said we’re only trying to get us some peace’ ie world peace, and also peace for John and Yoko to be alone, seen as they were on their honeymoon? Very clever

Wouldn’t quite agree with that, @Father McKenzie. While I agree there’s a double meaning in that line, it’s less about the honeymoon (after all, the Amsterdam Bed-In was their honeymoon, and they threw the doors open-wide to the press), and more about the attacks on them as a couple from, as John described them in 1968, some of their “beast friends” along with press, as well as the turmoil of the disintegrating Beatles.

The newspapers said
Say what’re you doing in bed
I said we’re only trying to get us a piece.
How’s THAT for a double meaning?

@Beatlebug, it is a sexual reference. After saying that this makes your spoiler hilarious, I will leave it at that.

@Beatlebug: he could have gone with ‘fish and finger pie’ if the song had been Penny Lane (another sexual reference) .
Must admit, I did chuckle when I saw @Zig’s post. I also love that there’s a ‘smiley’ of John and Yoko in the nude. It had to be used for this thread. I want to use it again, what the hell

Should have used that, I totally forgot about it. I’ve been Zepping too much, it seems, and also I’ve been hearing Penny Lane since I was a wee but didn’t understand it till later, whereas I understood what ‘Custard Pie’ was about immediately on hearing it (I only heard it in the past six months), so I tend to associate Custard Pie more than finger pie with sex. Either way… quite so.
Anyway, to get back on topic…

Yes.
Although I wouldn’t say that, exactly, as they did actually invite the press into their bedroom; more that, in that line, he made it sound as it ‘We’re only trying to get us some peace!’ when he actually meant world peace.

@Beatlebug: yeah, I see that now for sure. As for too much Zepping, there’s no such thing surely?
Too much is relative — namely, relative to how much Beatling I’ve been also doing. It’s more about the ratio than the gross quantity.

Agree. I’d also say that they were not just getting attacks as a couple but also racist attacks from both press and some fans who were against Yoko.

Besides John, Yoko, and the government official who performed the wedding, the people at the ceremony were Peter Brown and the brothers Tommy and David Nutter. Tommy was Peter Brown’s partner at the time. David took the photos of the event. Source
As I mentioned in the Abbey Road Cover thread, Tommy was the tailor who made the suits John, Paul, and Ringo wore in the picture.

This song gave me goosebumps this morning.
I was thinking about John being all excited and hyped up and wanting to memorialize his wedding and honeymoon in a song and that he had had years of songwriting practice so he could quickly come up with the song he wanted. THEN, how cool was it that he knew he could ring PAUL MCCARTNEY up and say, “Hey, come make a song with me.” How the song came together so quickly and still be so stellar and fun to listen to just made me shiver.

Having friends you can make art with on the spot is really amazing. i love being able to ask my friends how to continue a piece of writing and then us finishing it two hours later as a group effort. It must be even better with music.

^^trust me, it is awesome with music. If your friends are on the same wavelength as you, they might suggest something you never thought of (eg. what about a swirling crescendo using an orchestra to link these 2 songs together?), or they’ll agree with what you’re umming and erring about. End result: A fully functioning song! And then there are ‘jams’, which I don’t think exist in any other form of art?
Every Beatle was so lucky to have the other 3, it was a perfect symbiotic relationship.

I don’t think there is anything else that quite approaches the divine communion of souls that is a well-going jam session. Though I did get something kind of similar, once, when I was dancing with someone in a rather improvisatory free-form fashion.

This song goes under the radar for me, for some reason. Like it, though. Agree it’s like a solo Lennon type tune.
