I’ve loved all the versions of this song, especially the released master, but I’m also fond of the Anthology 2 version of Take 7 with the edit piece of Ringo’s drum track. It really demonstrates quite effectively how good Ringo is. Not to mention how conspiracists are very thoroughly debunked with the extremely audible “cranberry sauce” being said twice, then hearing John say, in a funny voice, “All right, calm down, Ringo!”
Meanwhile, did you know that Jimmy Iovine purchased the Mellotron that John played on this song? He then sold it to Trent Reznor, who used it on the end of the Nine Inch Nails song “Closer.”
(Not for the faint of heart, naturally!)

John is supposed to have composed SFF in 1966. So then, what is this from 1964?

John had a vague tune he liked in 1964, developed it and wrote the words in 1966. He may have been playing about with it throughout the interim. It’s not dissimilar to the process he took with songs during his househusband years which are heavily bootlegged.

John had a great knack for keeping old ideas around long enough for them to eventually end up on a record. He was able to spread his creativity around and compensate for period where he wasn’t rattling off all time great songs like it was nothing. The songs from the Escher demos lasted him years and were likely written in the span of a few months. On top of that he was recording home demos a lot, so we have an amazing insight into the different creative peaks he reached at certain points.

On the other hand, and this is typical Lennon, he gave specific songwriting advice to Harrison, to complete a song once started or it would be very difficult to finish. Add to this his moaning about McCartney wanting to start albums with finished songs and him having to knock off a few in the space of days and the picture becomes magnificently complex. He seems to me to be the kind of writer who needs a spark to boost a creative period (hence the Escher collection) and it makes me sad to think what was taken from us in 1980.

Strawberry Feilds forever is my favortie song of all time, it was the song that really got me into the Beatles. I’ve always been fasinated by just the whole vibe the song has going on. The Mellotron line in the begining, the orchestration in parts of the song, the lryics. Althought I don’t like a lot of the John songs this is one of my exceptions. I just love this song its so beautiful and pleasing to the ears.
Also for the longest time I didn’t know there was that thing at the end with the whole “I buried Paul/ Cranberry Sauce”, my mom told me and I listened to the true ending for the first time
