I just heard ‘Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five ‘ by Paul McCartney and Wings for the first time today and me very mind was blown away.

That’s a great song, one of the few Wings’ track I knew before I became a big fan. I love that opening-piano- it’s one of about 20 songs that I know how to play on the piano.

Absolutely!! I forgot to share my little Band On The Run story from last summer. I was at a pool party with 4 generations of my family present. The host was playing entire albums and was trying to find music everyone would like (ages 5-85). When he put BOTR on the party really got going and it seemed there was a song there for everyone. I hadn’t sat and listed to the whole album since the 80s and it really sounded great. Anyway 1985 was playing and building up to the crescendo when all of a sudden the big electric guitar chord hits and the song finishes with the BOTR coda. I was so surprised I laughed out loud (how could I have forgotten that ).

Haha I never noticed the little bit of Band On The Run at the end of 1985 until a few days ago and I thought my phone was broken when I heard it. Great song tho and it really has a nice groove to it

‘Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five‘… That song, “Hey Bulldog ,” and a few others I could listen to indefinitely.
McCartney did something super clever with that song. As mentioned above by Sigh Butterfly, the song ends with the fading chorus of “Band On The Run .”
What makes it clever is that ‘Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five‘ is the last song on the album while BOTR is the first song. So the ending of ‘Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five‘ takes you back to the start.
And on the single version of “BOTR” the B-side is ‘Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five‘ So again, when you’re done with ‘Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five‘ you’re taken right back to the A-side. We need someone like Ron Nasty to tell us if this was a first or whether McCartney filched the idea from someone else.

@sigh butterfly,
Never knew that ‘Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five ‘ was the b-side of the US single, in my world its always been ‘Zoo Gang’ (tho why Paul put it as a bonus track on ‘Venus And Mars ‘ for years i’ll never get).
And i’ve never got this idea that ‘Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five ‘ sends you back to the beginning of side one of the album unless you’re meant to skip ‘Band On The Run ‘ and go straight to ‘Jet ‘. It would only work if ‘Band On The Run ‘ was beginning but you get the fade out.
Maybe its just me who the concept bugs.

I think it’s just a ‘reprise’ of the Sgt Pepper top-and tail………A nod to himself.
My memory on BOTR was a 2 month Summer holiday in Europe with a mate. We camped at some site in Spain. It was playing in a bar and when it got to that bit after, ‘Stuck inside these four walls….. a couple of ten year olds went sarcastically ‘Aha ahahahaha’ Sent inside forever…cue ten year olds again “Ahahahahaha”
They made me laugh and I can still hear them to this day……..Little sods!

@sigh butterfly @meanmistermustard I don’t recall “Zoo Gang” at all – but yes indeed I see it as a bonus track on my Venus And Mars CD. Must not have made an impression on me; will have to revisit the zoo. (On my radio show, I did an episode on animals in Beatle songs – next time I can throw this one in)

Um…. does Traveling Wilburys count? George is in it 😀Because ‘Handle With Care‘ came on mum’s Pandora yesterday, but she skipped it before I could hear much more than the first seconds (I recognised George’s distinctively Harrisonic lead vocal immediately, of course)… so I promised myself I’d look it up and I did and I like it very much.
George!
Treat yourself to the whole song, it’s pretty wonderful

Two of my favourites. @natureaker anything strike you familiar and forum-y about that first song?
HT&E is my favourite on Revolver and in my top 5 most beautiful songs on planet Earth.

Can I just remind people that this thread is intended for Beatles and solo songs. There are threads elsewhere for cover versions and non-Beatles-related music.
