Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da is probably the Beatles song I’ve listened to the most number of times, mainly because it’s the only Beatles song I like to play along to with my acoustic guitar. Anyway, as far as the topic of song fragments that really grab me — this song is a veritable cornucopia of fragments that really grab me. There are so many, it’s almost like the entire song is just a jam-packed grab-bag of cool fragments. Some day maybe I’ll sit down and list them all. For now, I will cite the “ha ha ha!” parts (almost a Santa-Clausian “ho ho ho!”).

Any time the Beatles use piano in songs, especially if it’s only for a brief moment. Take, for example, Baby It’s You or In My Life . The amount of times I’ve replayed those couple seconds of those songs is insane.

I think the bridge parts of Anna and This Boy really get me. I also love the part where John sings “that I, I, I, I, should never, never, never be blue!” in Ask Me Why : it’s so beautiful!

Love that part too. There’s an innocence and energy about those early songs especially.

Love Come Tumbling Down – “I saw the look she gave, they must think I don’t get around” unbelievable two part harmony over that. Feels so good to listen to that part. Hard to put it into words, go listen to the song if you don’t know what I’m taking about.
Sgt Peppers – “sit back and let the evening go” into that horn line. Its so smooth, and shows just how deep their bag of tricks goes. The guitar part, and especially the vocals rule on this song, but the horns really decorate it in an unbelievable way that serves the song really well.

You can also feel the pain as Paul sings “as she looks into his eyes I feel”.
One of the too many Paul tracks that deserved to be more than a forgotten track buried on a CD single.
I wonder if one day we will see the rejected ‘Return to Pepperland‘ album as Paul goes thru the vaults.

I think even an inclusion on Flowers In The Dirt would put this song firmly into the category of underrated deep tracks. Instead it is released 10 years after it was recorded as a B side. It wasn’t even available in digital stores/streaming until the Flaming Pie deluxe in 2020, and then the 7″ singles in 2022. To have a song this good buried so deep in your catalog is incredible.
They are two very different songwriters, but Dylan is the only other artist I can think of to have that amount of quality depth in their catalogue. Not only have they consistently produced great songs into their 80s, which is incredibly rare in its own right, they have managed to have genuine creative resurgences decades after their “prime.” Songs like LCTD or Dreamin’ of You exemplify this as well as anything.

Forgot it was on the deluxe ‘Flaming Pie ‘ and have no idea what’s on the ‘Singles Collection’ but makes sense.
I’d add ‘Same Love’ to the same pile; a great performance and vocal on a track that was left in the vaults for a decade and then only issued as a b-side.
