A quick video on the influence of this little song:

This song is a great example of one of my favorite musical techniques: singing the same melody over two different progressions. I like the second progression for “as I write this letter” more than the first.
I never knew this was the first use of b6-b7-1. So damn common nowadays. Sounds just like “Billy Shears” after Sgt. Peppers, but that’s a I II III, a clever switch from a typical I- ii that was the familiar sound.
Great song by some great songwriters.

@Shamrock Womlbs Thanks for posting that clip. PS I Love You was so much more sophisticated than Love Me Do , wasn't it? I hadn't fully appreciated how lovely the chords and melody of that song are (though I wish he'd taken a direct line out of his keyboard so we couldn't hear the key press thuds).

Definitely one of their first Great Early Songs... so unlike anything else that they'd attempted at the time, whether melodically or rhythmically... 'Ask Me Why ' & 'Don't Bother Me ' are the only two that I can think of that even touch this one in inventiveness, pre-Revolver ... not only a Great Song but a Great Record as well... I mean, what a sound!...:-)

I have that record exactly as depicted in Joe's first post - signed by all four Beatles.
At first, I was disappointed that it wasn't signed on the "A" side - but I so much prefer P.S. I Love You! [Happy Valentine's to all]

Ask Me Why takes the cake for early Beatle’s inventiveness in my eyes. Absolutely stunning harmony in the debut album of a Beat Group.
