The song works really well with Paul singing the lead vocal. Definitely singing to John, and its a really heartfelt performance.

Many of you may not realize what an out of body experience this was for me and possibly others who grew up listening to that crackly, worn out demo tape in the early and mid 2000’s, dreaming of what it might have sounded like, listening to fan version upon fan version, trying to guess what the completed lyrics would have been…man. I tell you the truth: For some, Carnival Of Light is the Holy Grail of Beatles recordings – and in many ways, rightfully so. However, for me? Nothing–absolutely nothing–can compare to the sheer elation that I had in the hours leading up to the premiere of this song. I was on absolute pins and needles. A completely 50/50 mix of excitement and stress. There was SO many ways in which this could have gone bad. Would the song be overthought and ruined? Would it be GREAT? For that matter, even if it was…would people care? What if it flopped? I couldn’t bare the thought…and then the hours approached, and the lyrics were leaked. I was in total “OH MY GOD, OKAY, IT’S HAPPENING! EVERYBODDY STAY CALM!” mode. I didn’t know what to think! “THEY CUT THE MIDDLE?! HOLY S**T, PAUL! CAN IT WORK?! –OH! OHH! BUT ITS “I WANT YOU TO BE THERE FOR ME!! OH MY GOD, OF COURSE! IT’S SO OBVIOUS! IT WAS RIGHT UNDER MY NOSE ALL THESE YEARS!” etc….and then it happened.
It was beautiful, yall.
I saw both videos hit hundreds of thousands of likes…
I saw non-fans cry their eyes out at the music video…
I saw them completely overshadow every other song that week on multiple streaming platforms…
and best of all…I saw a Beatles song hit number 1 in real time.
THINK ABOUT THAT, We were here…we lived to see a brand new OFFICIAL Lennon/McCartney hit. IN OUR LIFETIMES….and just as the cherry on top, it completely upstaged The Rolling Stones’ new song to boot, just as a final little cheeky stamp on the “Rivalry.” MMM! sublime.
Everything about it was perfect. It may not be everyone’s personal favorite, but I wouldn’t trade the memory of those few weeks for anything in the world. I was THERE. I don’t think i’ll ever be happier as a Beatles fan.
Thank you, Beatles. I love you wonderful, wonderful people. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I think it will be more of a career honor for The Beatles if they win. I love the Beatles and was happy with the release, but it was not nearly as relevant or significant as these other songs nominated. The Beatles do have surprisingly few Grammy wins, so they might try to make up for that with an award this year. Somebody would be getting snubbed, like with Steely Dan’s win with Two Against Nature. (I love that album by the way.) Best rock performance I would enjoy seeing and think that it is absolutely deserving of that.

‘N&T’ is a great song, it holds up well, but I doubt it’s record of the year – it’s more a marvelous achievement of technology in how the track was put together. I haven’t heard the others but I’d be surprised if The Beatles won. It would be nice for all involved to have their work recognised but even back in the 60’s the Beatles weren’t that fussed with winning trophies.

I think it would be more a gesture of goodwill to the legacy of the Beatles if the song actually won. Which I’m not against. It’s holding up well for me.

Frankly, the Grammys are so bad they’ll reward some modern rubbish like how they disregarded Angry by the Rolling Stones.
I won’t be surprised if Beyonce or BTS gets Best Rock Album or best song instead of Now And Then or Hackney Diamonds, which are far superior but unappreciated as a whole by the judges.

Ive been thinking a lot about the use of AI in this song a lot lately. On one hand, you hear that The Beatles used AI on John Lennon ‘s voice for a new single, without any context it seems almost disgraceful. The threat AI poses to art is real and significant and many have faced backlash for the use of AI for visual art and music. The Beatles however are on the cutting edge once again. New AI plugins have become pretty widespread at this point to eliminate or isolate elements such as individual drum sounds, background noise, and in the Beatles’s case, lifting John’s voice from a 40 year old demo. Im not sure if The Beatles will be particularly influential or groundbreaking in this regard, but it is a cool element of their story that they continued to use tools on the cutting edge of recording technology. They tastefully implented AI as a tool to bring a very real song written by an alive and real person at the time to life. Its an extremely impressive tool, but also an explosive and potentially dangerous invention that may soon infiltrate deep into society and its technology.

I don’t know much about this newfangled technology of the whippersnappers, but surely it should have been possible to isolate John Lennon ‘s voice from a 40-year-old tape prior to the dawning of the age of Emperor Augustus Tiberius Elonius Musk, no..?

But the AI isn’t creating anything, is it? Just separating and isolating the Lennon-voice frequencies from all other frequencies on the cassette recording, is the way I understood it.

I agree with Paul’s thoughts here.
Also. All You Need Is Love ?!?! how did I forget to mention it next to the Imagines Hey Judes and Let It Bes of the world. Anyways sorry to derail the topic, those are my final thoughts on this subject summed up well by Paul.

I’m not sure I do. There’s a thin line between ripping something off and simply being inspired by it. There are numerous examples of the Beatles admitting to writing their own version of something that they had heard before, and others which they may not have admitted to. John got sued for using the line “here come old flat top”; others they got away with.
What Paul’s worried about is not really AI as such but copyright infringement. If an AI program “learns” from existing works, how is that different in principle from a human artist taking inspiration from it?
The practice of sampling without payment is a much more blatant example.

‘Now And Then ‘ wins the Grammy for Best Rock Performance. The winner of ‘Record of the Year’, which ‘NAT’ is also nominated for is due to be announced later tonight.
Winner: The Beatles – Now And Then
The Black Keys – Beautiful People (Stay High)
Green Day – The American Dream Is Killing Me
Idles – Gift Horse
Pearl Jam – Dark Matter
St. Vincent – Broken Man
To be fair, ‘NAT’ continues to hold up as a damn good song, not just an average one caught up in a ton of hype at the time of release.
It is pleasing to see the rewards of such a piece of work.
Out of interest; what’s the actual difference between ‘Record of the Year’ and ‘Song of the Year’?

Song of the Year: This award honours the songwriters who composed the song. It focuses on the lyrics and melody, recognizing the creative work behind the song’s composition
Record of the Year: This award celebrates the performance and production of a song. It goes to the performing artist, as well as the producers, recording engineers, and mixers who contributed to the specific recording
Confirmed as Record of the Year winners too. Glorious.
