I love this song, it’s so gorgeous. It breaks my heart that he couldn’t finish it though.

@Necko are you saying that Paul has to falsely get out hopes up about it Now And Then , and this is one of those times?

Do we know how much work The Threetles did on it for Anthology before scrapping it?
I really love this version (which I heard is not the Threetles but I don’t know) and I really doubt it could be bettered. Any info on the background to this version? It does sound eerily like George on the backing vocals. It’s also got the trademark Jeff Lynne rhythm track sound and it’s got such a professional production quality to it.

It is one of the fanmixes that float around, @Leppo. There are more than one.
Many have claimed to be The Threetles version. In this one, the drums do not feel Ringo, and I hear not a hint of Paul, George and Ringo among the backing vocals.
In 1995, Jeff Lynne said of the amount of time spent on it, and the progress made:
It was one day – one afternoon, really – messing with it. The song had a chorus but is almost totally lacking in verses. We did the backing track, a rough go that we really didn’t finish.
It was sort of a bluesy sort of ballad, I suppose, in A minor. It was a very sweet song; I liked it a lot, and I wished we could have finished it.
Paul commented in 2006:
It didn’t have a very good title, it needed a bit of reworking. It had a beautiful verse and it had John singing on it. But George didn’t want to do it.
The best thing about it all was to work with John again. Hearing him in the headphones, it was like he was in the next room. It’s like an impossible dream.
There are periodic rumours that Paul still really wants to do something with it. One rumour being that, with it looking unlikely a Threetles release will ever happen, he wants to go back to the drawing board and write the rest of the song for a Lennon and McCartney (a “making new music together for the last time…”, “John and Paul’s last ever recording”-type of thing) release.

I don’t know @Ron Nasty the “Love is you” backing vocal part sounds very George-like to me (is it lifted from Because ?). Also if you compare the drums to Free As A Bird they have the same ploddy robotic repetitiveness which some would say is a Jeff Lynne trademark. Perhaps as you say it is a fanmix but whoever did it must have had some great resources to write the string parts and produce it so professionally. Are some of the sections taken from other Beatles songs?

Yep, because then we wouldn’t have to sit through anymore badly recorded crappy Lennon vocals. (Speaking for myself, of course.)
Instead we’d have a crappy Paul vocal covering a John vocal.
But its John and Paul so it must be brilliant. One more final recording until the next one more final recording.

We’re never getting any of them. We’re just going to get teased about them once every few years for the rest of our lives.

Well, it looks like it’s actually happening now due to an AI cleaning up John’s tape. Maybe they can get an AI to make Carnival Of Light more palatable to the general public so it’ll finally get released.
In all seriousness, I think it’s really neat using AI for stuff like this. Another thing I find intriguing is using AI to fill in the gaps of partially lost works, say, of literature or film.

I’m not sure how I feel about it. In some regards I wouldn’t mind just letting things be, and keeping it a rough demo. But it seems like they’re going to release it as a cleaned up version anyway.

So Ringo apparently gave some more detail about the forthcoming track (which neither he, nor Paul nor Apple have given the title of, but we know that it can only be this song) at his 83rd birthday celebration, and regarding how it’s constructed. Apparently, after using machine learning to separate John’s voice from the dodgy demo and then mixing it in with the material recorded with Jeff Lynne in 1995, Ringo was sent the files to add a new drum part to it. And then Giles Martin was brought in to add a string arrangement. This certainly makes it sound a bit like it’s going to be a rather hodgepodge product, given that it’s a mixture of different sessions and producers.

That sounds practically like most Beatles songs from their last 3 albums.

I have this vision of a horrendous mess of John’s original vocal mixed with bits and pieces from 1994/5 and nowadays. I’ve always been against a Frankenstein Beatles reunion creation taken from all over the place and if Ringo and Giles are adding new parts now and who knows what Paul has done then it’s very much something I’m not that bothered by or wanting that much. It may sound wonderful however and I do hope it does if it’s added to the Beatles legacy.
I get why Paul wants to do it tho and he’s got the right to do that.
