I remember thinking the same thing, as I’m sure many others did. But it seems the Pope at the time, you know, the one who owned 51% of General Motors, was also named Paul.
Also, given the May 1968 emergency meeting John called to announce to his bandmates that he was Jesus, his “I Found Out ” line might be John mentioning himself, but not really.

Hey Jude was recorded in August of '68. Don't Let Me Down was recorded in January of '69. I wonder if the "don't let me down" phrase in Hey Jude influenced John when writing Don't Let Me Down .
