Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds .

Is this really about LSD?  I’ve been teased all this year for liking the Beatles.  Calling them drugies and horrible song writers.  Its been hard.  So it’s almost the end of the year and I want to clear things up for this song.  I have heard that this song was about a painting by Juilan. Is this true? I need help on clearing this up.

Thanks!!

John Lennon , the actual composer of the song denied that it was about LSD and confirmed that it was based on a drawing of Julian’s. a-hard-days-night-john-5

Horrible songwriters? Really? I bet half the crap they listen to isn’t even written by the artist, and is about how many hoes they have and how rich they are… -_-

And as for druggies, pretty much every good band has been influenced by some kind of drug. It’s a part of rock and roll. Even so, it was only really John that got into it that much.

Yes! It was based on a drawing of a girl named Lucy by Julian. He titled it Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds . It was Lucy with stars in the background. Lucy has passed away recently.

Amd the people saying they are horrible songwriters are delusional.a-hard-days-night-paul-11

John can deny that it was about LSD, but there is absolutely no doubt that LSD was the major influence for the song. But the name certainly came from Julian.

BeatleBaby18 – have you seen the Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds article on this site? It could probably do with some more work, but has a couple of quotes that should explain what you want to know.

Here’s the painting, which I believe is now owned by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd:

Interesting Joe – I had no idea it was owned by Gilmour.

A piece of memorabilia from my favorite band owned by one of my favorite guitarists – too cool.

I think this is an unsung bit of clever production amongst other clever bits on the album. They had the sound down so well with effects on each instrument that mixing seems to have been relatively simple and they were able to vary it for different needs, eg the 2nd mono mix done for Yellow Submarine . The stereo remaster of Peppers has been a bit disappointing and nowhere more so than this track. Check out the weird little anomalies that got cleaned up in the Yellow Submarine Songtrack remaster. The “standard” stereo master (RS5 I think) has all these little blemishes.

I’ll never be able to buy that it was about Julian’s friend Lucy. It just so happened it was on one of the most psychedelic albums of all time?

I just believe John didn’t want to go out in front of the media and publically admit to signing about LSD like Paul had.

Well, Paul did say in 2004 that it’s “pretty obvious” that the song is about an acid trip.

Paul said it, it must be true. What a relief that debate’s over then.

The song title stands for LSD. No matter how they “disproved” it (although I don’t think they straight-up ever did–providing an alternative interpretation is not the same as disproving something), you can’t get around that.

Only music can save us.

It also stands for pounds shillings and pence. John was high on money. QED.

To his dying day John stuck with the same story. Considering how willing he was to destruct all Beatles myths and at times put the boot in, to stick with that same story to me speaks volumes. And its not like he liked the Beatles recording and so wanted to protect it.

As for “inspired by”, well we all know John was taking LSD at the time so it probably had an effect but not enough to render his account inaccurate.

The version of events that I tend to believe is that the original inspiration was the drawing, but that most of the lyrics were based on acid trips.
