Thanks mja for those links. I think the comparison that comes closest may be David Bowie’s Italian version, though the Beach Boys would be a close second.

My favorite among the list in that article is the Italian version of “Downtown” — Ciao Ciao.

Yeah vonbontee, that Chubby Checkers in German is wild.

Run For Your Life ,

Your clip only confirms what I said before: it’s evident that the Beatles took the opportunity of recording the song again, in German, to improve on it — which improvements included both the singing (especially the harmony parts) and the guitar fill.

With the 2nd link, hope you noticed there’s a link to the German lyrics on that page, and from that page there’s a link to an English translation of the German lyrics. Answers your “Einmal so” question in another thread.

Thanks mja.  They translate einmal so as “never that way”, but I think that’s still a figuratively stilted translation (since the “never” is already in the noch nie).  I still suspect there’s a more colloquial sense to it, something like “nuh UH!” or “no way!”

If you look at the comments section on the song, in response to a question from me about the translator and Otto Demlar, Joe says he will be changing the song entry to Camillo Felgen when he gets the chance. That little question put to bed.

Thanks for doing that.  Though it seems like a point of minuscule minutiae, I think it’s good for a site like this to have its nuts-and-bolts facts straight.

I looked up Camillo Felgen on YouTube; he sounded and looked like an old schmaltzy German version of a lounge lizard.  It would almost be like Lawrence Welk coming in to coach the Beatles!

I’ve changed the articles (Komm, SLD and the session page). Thanks for pointing out Camillo Felgen to me – I wasn’t aware of him before.

However, one thing did come to light that I don’t think has been reported elsewhere. Most accounts say that Felgen had 24 hours to write the translations, then fly to Paris from Germany to teach the songs to The Beatles. That may have been the case, but it meant he would have been contacted on 26 Jan 1964, three days before the session actually took place. Why? Because the session was originally supposed to have been on 27 January, though The Beatles failed to turn up. Felgen was there on that day, as was Otto Demmler. So it Felgen would have had a couple more days to work on the translation, if he needed it.

Glad to have been of some help by pointing out the discussion happening here. Camillo Felgen wasn’t someone I’d come across before either, until the contradictions were pointed out here. I think you make an interesting point about when he must have been contracted, and one that must surely be right.
