Am I correct in assuming that the first line
I get high when I see you go by
is the first instance of the Beatles using that phrase? I know they slipped ‘Turns me on’ into She’s A Woman the previous year.
Just interesting…

Nothing else comes to mind. Dylan did mishear “I get high” in ‘I Want To Hold Your Hand ‘ but i doubt that counts.
I thought we had a discussion on this song.
Anyway. I love this track. Yeah the lyrics are lazy and John detested it (listening to him play on the radio in 1974 is a delight) but there is a gorgeous innocence thought-out. The way John cannot take the lyrics seriously and sings them so in verse two is a treasure well worth discovering over and repeatedly.

I just love the way John sings that last line: ‘Yes it’s so hard, loving you, loving yooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu……..‘ his falsetto is gloriously trippy.
I do really like this song– it might possibly be my favourite off the album, along with You Like Me Too Much and I’ve Just Seen A Face . What’s funny is that I didn’t think much of these three when I first heard them, but they’ve grown on me.
I listened very carefully and I heard about four different guitars, though one of my Beatles books says they overdubbed six. It could well be. All I know is that the rhythm is one of John’s finest.

The outtake on ‘Anthology 2 ‘ gets a bit of a kicking from some saying its pretty much filler and not interesting enough. I love it as its such a fun outtake and whilst you can hear John really is not enamored by it in the slightest its still a great vocal.
Oh for goodness sake, Apple/EMI/Universal have blocked the damn thing on youtube even tho you cant stream it anywhere. They really are petty idiots.
Note: I fixed the link for the outtake on 3/3/23. Indulge yourself.
Kindly,

This song makes me really sad for some reason so I don’t like listening to it
Was never very fond of it anyways, but it’s at least better than Dizzy Miss Lizzy

It’s been said before, but… the Beatles’ filler album tracks are the equivalent of other bands’ singles. Witness: I Wanna Be Your Man

Wouldn’t go so far, there are a few Beatles fillers that if they had more time and more options wouldnt have been released – or if the ‘White Album ‘ had been a single album. It doesnt mean they are necessarily bad songs; ‘Little Child ‘ and ‘When I Get Home ‘ are blatantly there to fill space but still great pop songs which I love hearing.
Found it. At 2:15 you can hear a listener request John play ‘Its Only Love’ whilst he is guest DJ and he openly says its the only song he did he dislikes and that if they play it he would have suffer (part one is here, both are brilliant to listen to as John is having so much fun).

Technically John is correct. Its more than likely John fell into old habits of getting such details wrong but there is the chance John had grown familiar with the US ‘Rubber Soul ‘ having been living in the US for a couple of years.

That’s the beauty of this one and other Beatles songs. You may go thru a period where you rediscover a song of theirs and fall in love with it.
Hard to believe in their short 6-7 years of recording, the different genres of music the’ve made.

I don’t particularly like the song but it’s great fun to play and sing along to on an acoustic guitar with a capo like the record.
TELL ME MORE
Which fret is it on? How do you know? How is it that I’ve been playing it capo-less all this time?!
*runs out of breath*

It’s on the fifth fret according to The Beatles Complete Chord Songbook so the first chord is a G. It gives it that cool ringing guitar sound that was played by George on acoustic (John played it on his acoustic 12-string too but lower down the neck).

Thanks for the thought, RN, but I think I’m okay. I knew the chords already, just didn’t know about the capo.

I’m in love with this song! Bit disappointed to read that John disliked the song in later years, but I personally think the lyrics are brilliant and the melody itself beautifly done.

The melody is nice and the lyrics are ok. I find it difficult to ignore the “I get high when I see you go by, my oh my” line though.
It’s still better then quite a few of the songs on Help !

Wonder how this woulda sounded with a harmony or two on the chorus…
Any dark overlords out there know how that wavery guitar was done? I’ve assumed it was a tremelo knob on the amp, but recently I read something suggesting that it was a wang bar being wiggled rapidly, and that seems possible too. I’m pretty sure it’s NOT the Leslie as has been suggested elsewhere, but I’ve been wrong before.
