I think most fans can agree CT/S and SFF/PL are two of, (or the two) greatest singles they released.

But which is better?

I'm inclined to say the former myself. I think the song quality would be Something > Strawberry Fields > Come Together > Penny Lane with all being brilliant songs. That ranking slightly gives CT/S the edge.

What do you all think?

Tall, dark-haired QuarryMan likes basketball, music, and naturally, boys. He was a valuable participant on the track team. He is one of Freeport's great contributors to the recording world. As for the immediate future, QuarryMan has no plans, but will take life as it comes.

SFF/PL because I think it, along with Sgt Pepper had that huge impact on the future of popular music. They had made a significant change to their music and image starting with this single, and by the time of Come Together /Something , the world had long acknowledged that The Beatles were no longer the cute mop top boys, but had become influential and devout musicians with songs consisting deeper contexts and meanings.

Sorry, @QuarryMan, but I couldn't disagree more. I rarely consider Something /Come Together as a single since it was the first time, in the UK at least - which is the canon discography, they had released two songs from an album after the album had been released (they had released singles consisting of album tracks on the same day as an album's release).

There are many other singles, that were recorded as singles, I would rank way above Something /Come Together . Sorry!

Hey Jude /Revolution
Paperback Writer /Rain
Day Tripper /We Can Work It Out
All You Need Is Love /Baby You're A Rich Man
I Want To Hold Your Hand /This Boy
I Feel Fine /She's A Woman

Of their singles, for me at least, Something /Come Together as a single would be very near the bottom of the list. Not because they're not great songs, but because I think of them as album tracks, the opening two tracks of their last great hurrah.

Again, apologies, but I find the comparison deeply flawed.

I think it is Penny Lane /SFF with Hey Jude /Revolution and Paperback Writer /Rain right behind.

I'm not keen on Something . Strawberry Fields Forever /Penny Lane  is the best single in my opinion.

Personally I think Strawberry Fields Forever is probably the greatest single of all time, followed by Good Vibrations and then maybe Like A Rolling Stone or God Save The Queen.

As for other Beatles singles, I'll take Paperback Writer / Rain , We Can Work It Out / Day Tripper , A Hard Day's Night / I Should Have Known Better , Hey Jude / Revolution , I Feel Fine / She's A Woman , and All You Need Is Love / Baby You're A Rich Man over Something / Come Together .  Something is a song that I appreciate far more than I enjoy it. I don't even consider it one of George's best tunes, though I'm really happy he wrote a song that was so successful.

Dislike is the wrong word. I'm with Pablo on this one; I appreciate it musically, but it's definitely not one of my favorites. I think George had plenty of far more superior songs.

I do listen to it every now and then though.

As a single 'Strawberry Fields Forever ' is pulled by Penny Lane ' for me; the former is one of their greatest songs whereas 'Penny Lane ' I find a chore of a listen.

Best Beatles single. There are too many contenders too list.

'I Want To Hold Your Hand /This Boy ' would be up there.

"I told you everything I could about me, Told you everything I could" ('Before Believing' - Emmylou Harris)

"Don't make your love suffer insecurities; Trade the baggage of 'self' to set another one free" ('Paper Skin' - Kendall Payne)

Interesting thoughts. I'm surprised that you guys aren't Something fans, it's one of my favorites. The descending chord sequence, the strings in the bridge, Paul's ever melodic bass playing and the gorgeous guitar solo make it a stand out for me. Plus it's George's only A-Side. Plus I don't think I've listened to it once without miming along to Ringo's drumming in the solo.

I do think CT/S works better as a single since they're both focused on rock with CT being hard rock and Something a power ballad whereas SFF is psychedelic and Penny Lane more melodic baroque pop.

However I can see why you guys prefer SFF/PL. The intro to Strawberry Fields Forever with those throbbing chords is among my favorite moments in their canon, as is the (correct me if I'm wrong) piccolo solo on the last Penny Lane chorus.

I remember getting the 'Blue Album ' in the early 90's (first Beatles album I ever bought as it had 28 songs on 1 cassette) and not liking it. Folk go on about the imagery, musicianship , the naughty joke etc yet it bores me senseless. I don't hate it, it's just dull.

Your posting style reminds me of Dark Overlord's.

On subject, I wouldn't consider those their greatest/best singles. (Kinda into early Beatles more than later.)

I'm not familiar with Dark Overlord.

That's interesting, you're one of the few Beatles fans I've met who prefer early Beatles. The only other is my neighbour, whose husband went to school with Paul and George! Off topic but he witnessed the famous incident of George's dad punching the teacher and also recalls Paul sneaking off from lessons to go and play music.

I'm surprised you find Penny Lane dull. I always thoughts PL and SFF had a similar feel to each other.

In my opinion, neither. I much prefer between Paperback Writter/Rain , We Can Work It Out /Day Tripper , I Feel Fine /She's A Woman or Let It Be /You Know My Name (Look Up The Number). Although Strawberry Fields Forever /Penny Lane would be in my top 5 Beatles singles.

I think they're both equal and are good in different ways. If I want a psychedelic rocker as the A-side and a pop rocker as the B-side, then I'll go for Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane , if I want a classic rock blues rock number as the A-side and a classic rock ballad with a great solo as the B-side, then I'll go with Come Together /Something .
