I wrote a piece on this yesterday: https://www.beatlesbible.com/2…..d-studios/

Note that they're just considering whether to mount an appeal. Also, the sale hasn't yet been confirmed by EMI, though it's bound to go ahead in some form. Apparently Abbey Road Studios has been losing money for about 20 years, which makes its future as a studio uncertain.

If the National Trust buys Abbey Road it would likely be converted into a museum, unless they keep part of it open as a separate business. It's an interesting idea but I'm not sure whether that's the best thing. Part of me thinks such a unique studio space should carry on being used (apparently the acoustics in 1 and 2 are second to none), but I'd dearly love it if there was a huge Beatles museum in London.

The National Trust? No, it's a charitable org that buys and maintains castles, stately homes and other places of historic importance around Britain. They own some amazing places.

I signed it earlier but I'm sure if it helps or not. They would probably prefer UK signatures, or so I would think.

Joe – I was thinking of something along the lines of the National Park Service, but for buildings. Oh well. I'm happy if it stays in British hands rather than some international conglomerate.

And Jesus for the save!

Andrew Lloyd Webber? Interesting… So it might still be used to record music, but how can I visit it then?

Lord Andrew himself – yes!

I'd love to think that amongst other things there would be a possibility to visit, even if at very strictly controlled times. I'd be there like a shot.

I don't understand why Paul doesn't buy it… if Andrew Lloyd Webber can, then why can't Paulie? Even after “the divorce” he still has mega-millions, no?

Paul is VERY shrewd when it comes to business and above all else he'd not see this as a busniess venture. It's sad in a way that he thinks like that, but he's well known for being like it.

Lloyd Webber, on the other hand, obviously has a different point of view and good on him!

Before I thought, “It's sad that they're going to sell it, but The Beatles aren't there any more so it's just a building, right?”.

And then I watched that video (and yes it's too short) and fangirled over:

  • The stairs
  • The area rugs
  • The drums
  • The microphones
  • The analog mixer thing

And concluded it must be saved! How did EMI manage to screw this up?

So, who's going to chip in for the renovations? mjb, you're right about Paul's business savvy… is this just a losing proposition?

LONDON — The National Trust could buy and preserve the Abbey Road studios — where the Beatles recorded many of their classics — after an outpouring of public concern over its possible demolition, the British heritage-protection charity said Thursday.

Anxious not to see it fall into private hands, many people have contacted the National Trust asking that it buy the London landmark, the charity said. It has been put up for sale by cash-strapped record company EMI.

There had already been an “astonishing outpouring” of public support for the idea and it is possible the agency may intervene if it is clear the public wants more Beatles sites protected, trust spokesman John Hewitt said.

The campaign to save Abbey Road studios — which could be sold and turned into upscale housing in the St. John’s Wood neighborhood in North London — was spurred by former Beatle Paul McCartney and prominent disc jockey Chris Evans.

McCartney, who has long had a house near the studios, said on a national news broadcast earlier this week that he would be delighted if the building could be saved. He said some people long associated with the studio were considering an effort to preserve it.

McCartney did not, however, offer to put up the cash himself — the studios are thought to be worth between 10 million pounds ($16 million) and 30 million pounds ($48 million).

Abbey Road has become an important part of Beatles lore, in part because of the 1969 album named after the recording studio. The crosswalk in front of the building was immortalized on the album cover, and many fans visit the site each year.

Since The Beatles’ heyday, Abbey Road has been one of the world’s most famous rock music studios, used by such artists as Pink Floyd, McCartney, George Harrison , Jeff Beck and Radiohead.

But EMI has been unable to find a buyer for the studio, in part because recording technology now permits many artists to conduct their own sessions at home using personal computers.
