Do You Want To Know A Secret . It’s a lovely track. Love George’s singing and the doo da dos.
I like it too, and while we’re at it: I like A Taste Of Honey …

One of my favourite ever Beatles songs. Take 3 on ‘Anthology 2 ‘ has always been one of my highlights from that collection, the roughness of the take is a delight, especially John’s vocal.

I always liked ‘It’s Only Love ‘ as well and then when I read that John hated it, it sort of influenced my views regarding the song sadly. Its not one of the stellar songs on Help , but so catchy! Maybe not what John was into when he disregarded it in 1971 or whenever!? He was really into the ‘counter culture’ thing by then, and much more serious! One of the better minor songs on Help in my opinion!

I’ve been deep into Run For Your Life from Rubber Soul since I’ve heard it. I love the melodie, the lyrics are funny and sarcastic, the tune is fast and is a great closer. I really like that song. I know John didnt like it at least since after the breakup but I get lots out of the song.
There isnt a Beatles song I really dislike though

I have always enjoyed Run For Your Life as well. Apart from Revolution 9 which is more of a sound collage, there is not a song by The Beatles which I don’t like.

‘RFYL’ is brilliant but I don’t believe John’s lyrics are sarcastic.
‘With You Without You’ appears to get a lot of negative reaction and thrown away as some weird boring Indian George track which drags ‘Pepper’ down. I think it’s a piece of genius that lifts ‘Pepper’ massively. The lyrics are incredible, well worth spending time taking them in, but what gets me is the instrumental section/passage which could possibly be the greatest instrumental section going (two contenders on one album with ‘ADITL’). If ever music should be played loud this is an automatic choice. And it gets reactions.
Ignore the 2017 mix tho, its godawful.

Do you all think the lyrics to Run For Your Life (which don’t bother me to be honest) are that much worse than You Can’t Do That ? To me it always felt like the continuation of that.

Well, ‘YCDT’ is a threat of letting her down if she went with another guy whereas ‘RFYL’ is a straight out warning that he’d rather have her dead than be someone else. Rightly, violence against women should not be promoted or encouraged but I’m not going to get all uptight about an almost 57 year old song sung by a guy who completely denounced his actions (which he was deeply ashamed of), changed his entire ways and thoughts and apologised numerous times.

The general possessive-aggressive attitude has always been quite similar to me. In YCDT it’s not about killing, but the whole ‘I told you, you mustn’t talk to This Boy , if I see you talk to him one more single time it will be the end!’ attitude isn’t that different.
Honestly, in my opinion Run For Your Life , while certainly inconsiderate, isn’t something Lennon would have to deeply apologize for and regret for all eternity. I don’t take those early to mid Beatles relationship songs too seriously. E.g. did Lennon really see his love peek through the window and ignoring him while he knocked at the door like in No Reply ? To me, such things are mostly fictional. There are only so many ways to say ‘I Love You’ but the point of singing about shoot-outs in Dakota and the tibetan book of the dead haven’t quite arrived yet, so they just came up with different relationship scenarios increasingly including jealousy and doubt, some of them may have been inspired by true feelings and events to some degree, but that’s it. RFYL and to a slightly lesser degree YCDT are just the ones that go a bit too far and may appear tasteless, but to be honest: so what. In Norwegian Wood he has an affair and burns down her house, but to me it’s just great storytelling and great music.

It’s Only Love is possibly my most listened to track on Help , and the Anthology version is also great. I think a lot of it comes down to how John was feeling at the time of writing a song, thinking of it as a throwaway filler type.
Put me down for liking Run For Your Life as well. The ending na na na refrain is very catchy!

I know this thread it dead but…. I’ve never met another “I’m So Tired ” fan.
I’ve always loved the guitar and vocals. For me it’s easy to sing. And the lyrics are also easy to remeber.

sir walter raleigh, RubeI've been up on the mountain, and I've seen his wondrous grace,
I've sat there on the barstool and I've looked him in the face.
He seemed a little haggard, but it did not slow him down,
he was humming to the neon of the universal sound.

One of Lennon’s most clever lines. Its historically informed and such a great lament about his smoking habit. I found out recently that there is actually an old Cigarette brand named after Sir Walter Raleigh so it could have been a reference to that, but I had read in a book that the reference is to SWR being a huge proponent of smoking tobacco since he had just established a colony in North Carolina and was trying to sell his new export.
Everyone seems to despise Little Child and I get why, but the harmony for “I’m so sad and lonely” is great and so Ive always liked the song. The phrase “Little Child ” and “little girl” are antiquated expressions and are obviously problematic alongside the many rock figures who actually had relationships with underage girls, but in this case its kind of like saying “baby” which is still used today to show fondness to a love one and isnt meant to be taken literally. But I get why people are uncomfortable with it and honestly dont feel very strongly about defending it.
On a similar note I like Run For Your Life because the lyrics are so jarring. In My Life is so well written and the melodic phrasing fits the lyrics so perfectly that you often are able to sing along without really hearing the beauty of the lyrics. Then when you listen close you realize how much of a masterpiece that song truly is. With Run For Your Life its almost the opposite. I sing along from the beginning and if im not paying attention I make it all the way through without a second thought. But sometimes I catch myself after the first line thinking “good lord John that is really harsh”

You know that I’m a wicked guy and I was born with a jealous mind is one of the best all time Lennon lyrics. It cuts deep into part of his personality and I admit to relating to that mindset at times. I’m glad he wrote the song because real life and real feelings can be ugly.
