Back In The USSR probably the greatest Album opener in Rock music.

Arrives kicking and motors through like a tornado. The Beatles doing what they do best - Rocking Out!

It’s fun and I love the way it contrast to Dear Prudence . My favourite opening segment to a Beatles album.

Probably to most political Beatles really got in music (before breakup)

**Yes, I'm aware of John's activism and how they refused to perform to segregated audience.

Taxman comes to mind with Mr Heath and Mr Wilson. Back In The USSR represents Paul and the Beatles at their playful best. He was on fire in that regard on the White Album with Rocky Raccoon , Why Don’t We Do It In The Road, etc.

Paul probably couldn't forsee a time when Ukraine would try to lean towards the West.

Probably couldn't foresee a time when BOAC airlines would be defunct, either

@Ahhh Girl -- I think in modern history through the 19th and 20th centuries, Ukraine has been known as a major influential cultural region of Russia, so it's probably a case of Paul wanting to reference prominent features & cliches of Russia (e.g., "balalaikas ringing out") and wanting another 2-syllable word to add to "Moscow".

During the Soviet era, Ukraine was not part of Russia per se. Both were republics within the USSR. But Russia was the dominant one and in the West we tended to use the names Russia and Soviet Union interchangeably.
