Well happy (early) birthday to me! It's eight days away yet, but I got my present early. Just got here! The ultimate boxed set of Sgt. Pepper! It's GORGEOUS!! I LOVE IT!!! The slip cover is the album cover, but there's a cool 3D effect to it. If you remember the Rolling Stones' album "Their Satanic Majesties Request", and that cover,it's like that. Same effect. Really cool and the four Beatles in their colorful band uniforms really stand out.

Slip the cover off, and the box itself looks like the EMI master tape box for the album. Open the box and the goodies are inside! You have the album again that is gatefold with four pockets on the left side holding two Sessions CDs, the Stereo mix of the album (newly mastered by Giles Martin) and the Mono mix of the album. On the right, two pockets hold the video content. You have Blu Ray and DVD there. There's the album (again) as audio content and it has "The Making Of" where Paul, Ringo, George Martin, with some stuff that was there from George Harrison talking about making the album. Then you have the promotional films. I have the 1+ Blu Ray collection so those are all on there, but ah well, it's still cool to have as part of this collection. Each of the four album CDs have a different "out take" photo from the cover session except for the Stereo mix CD which has the cover as was issued.

Other goodies include a replica of the poster that record shops got, as well as John's "Mr. Kite" circus poster. It's cool, and I'm thinking of framing that. You of course have the requisite standee, mustache, and etc that came with the album.  Best of all there's a beautiful 144 or so page hard back book with tons of photos and it goes in depth song by song.

All in all it's a beautifully done collection. If they do the same for the White Album next year I'm DEFINITELY getting that! So excited and I need to go play now. I've already heard the music thanks to Spotify, and it sounds amazing.

Oh and before you ask, there is no "Carnival Of Light". The bonus tracks are : Original mono mix of Strawberry Fields, Original mono mix of Penny Lane, First mono mix of A Day In The Life, Original mono mix of Lucy in the Sky, First mono mix of She's Leaving Home and a mono promo mix of Penny Lane that was for the U.S. market at the time. But of course Amazon tells you all this stuff I think anyway. LOL

This is the most stunning "new" music from the Beatles. I think it is just revolutionary. The difference to the old mix is just so unbelievable. The songs sound like they were recorded this or last year, a time wrap experience. I always had a bit of a problem with Sgt Pepper because I thought it was not well mixed and sounded not as good as the later albums, and also, strangely, not better than Rubber Soul and Revolver, at least partly. Now I experience the full depth this album and now I find it is truely their greatest achievement... e.g. "Fixing A Hole": I had not previously noted the toms in the second verse ...

It seems there is still so much to discover... I go down on my knees and beg Giles Martin to re-mix the other albums... as far as possible, I don´t know if it makes sense with the early 2-track recordings. But I would pay anything to hear those re-mixed versions of Magical Mystery Tour, I Am The Walrus, Your Mother Should Know, The Fool On The Hill, All You Need Is Love, Day Tripper, etc. etc., all those songs from the intermediate period like Pepper. Maybe, and hopefully, also the White Album, Let it be and Abbey Road could profit, although I think their original mixes have been much better than Sgt. Pepper´s...

What do you all think?

I completely agree, the new mix really opened my eyes and have helped me to understand the true genius of Sgt Pepper's! One can hear every instrument very clearly as if one would stand in the studio during the recording process, especially the bass and drums have benefited from the new mix in my opinion. Or the way the winds sound in Good Morning Good Morning - what would I give if Giles Martin could remix Savoy Truffle so that the winds in that song also sound that powerful. All in all, I also really wish there will be remixes of the later albums, especially MMT and the White Album, but to be honest I'm not very optimistic about Magical Mystery Tour. But, who knows, maybe there will be a surprise...

Not once does the diversity seem forced -- the genius of the record is how the vaudevillian "When I'm 64" seems like a logical extension of "Within You Without You" and how it provides a gateway to the chiming guitars of "Lovely Rita. - Stephen T. Erlewine on Sgt Pepper's

I'm glad it's getting that reaction, I think it's a worthy remix, punchier like the mono and not too sparkly like other stereo mixes. @Martha you might be interested to know that the brass on Savoy Truffle sounds that way because George insisted on them being recorded a certain way, I'm unsure whether there was a clean track to begin with. In fact I'm concerned that much of the White Album might prove similar but who knows, clearly there was a lot to choose from when doing the stereo mixes. Unlike (to get back on topic) Sgt Peppers, which had a definite progression because the songs were largely already written, and where they weren't they all shared ideas and took any good suggestion. But this is the point at which some commentators decide "the rot" sets in, which is just rubbish in my opinion. They went from a touring band to a studio band and Peppers manages that break brilliantly and now it has a remix worthy of it in stereo.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I wonder if anyone can help with a few questions about the lovely looking 6disc box set.

The Mono album (disc 4) - is it the same as the Mono master that was included in the Mono box set, but with some bonus tracks? The same mix, etc?

The various takes and mixes on discs 2, 3 and bonus tracks on 4 - Are all of these previously unreleased? Were any of them on the Anthology albums? Are any of the other stereo or mono mixes the same as on the 1+ box set or Past Masters or Mono Masters?

Many thanks for your help.

Andy

The Mono disc is the original mono mix with bonus tracks like original single mono versions and alternate mono versions. The takes are all previously unreleased officially, some are what should have been on Anthology without extra mucking about (ie the original takes not the composite Anthology versions), many were previously only available bootlegged. The DVD and Blu-rays have the stereo remix in 5.1 high fidelity audio formats. As far as I'm aware, they are not the same as any previous release.

There is a 2015 remix of 'Strawberry Fields Forever' which was first released on the '1+' DVD.

RM6 of 'A Day In The Life' has a different announcement to the one which has been booted but the mix is the same.

Take 8 of 'Sgt. Pepper... (Reprise)' and take 9 of 'Lovely Rita' are my favourites of the outtakes at this moment. Really fun tracks to listen to, 'Lovely Rita' goes by so fast, sounds way faster than on the record. What's with the weird backwards gibberish during the song's piano intro?

At the start lennon complains about some technical issue with his sound cutting in and out,and after a "keep it"....... maybe he decided to treat you to a lovely impression of that actual effect ?

It always makes me smile when i hear it.

It looks nice. If I were to own a jukebox, I'd love to have this one. Yet (Nit Pickington at your service!) I can't help feeling a bit disappointed that Stu's photo was summarily cast aside with the slice of a knife.

Anyone out there enjoy the remixes?  I have not heard them at all yet. Anyone have a favorite one of how they now sound?  I would like to hear which mixes you guys think sound good!

Good Morning Good Morning is my favorite mix. Cleaner drums, louder bass, and a new sound to the song.

I've been listening closely to With A Little Help From My Friends and this mix is so clear I can hear how Ringo varies the snare sound between the flat, intimate hits during the verses and middle-8s and the hard ringing side-of-the-snare in the choruses, something I hadn't noticed before.

In general the album sounds more spooky than ever to me. Big tests were the mixes of Lucy and Kite and they're amazing, in particular how huge the vocal is on the latter and the vast improvements in the mixing of the tamboura on the former.

Thanks!  I am excited to hear it some day. I want to listen to it in the dark and just let my ears take over and hear the differences in the mix!

And even earlier (June, no less!), these guys did it live with as close to the actual instruments as possible:

Wow, that was an unbelievable performance! Thanks for sharing it @ewe2!

They really got every detail right, even little things like the 'shhh' at the end of A Day In The Life or starting with the acoustic guitar part in the same song slightly before the audience stops clapping. I wonder though, did they use kazoos or toiletpaper combs in Lovely Rita?

Anyway, it warms my heart to see so much love for the Beatles and such a high quality live revival of their music and I wished that the audience would have shown their appreciation  by not clapping before the final chord has faded. paul-mccartney

They did, @Martha ! Also used proper bass harmonicas. I think I was most impressed by Within You, Without You: one of the main guys could play a sitar and sing the lyrics and the orchestration of Indian and Western was spot-on. The bass and guitars were the most accurate to the originals I've ever heard. I think we have to thank a large part of that to the release of the full scores some years ago, they're really detailed. But performance and equipment were equal to the task. It blows my mind that a quintessential studio album could be performed to that quality.
